Just wondering if you could monitor the network on a DMR capable scanner. I know on a Ham radio you have to have your DMR ID to access the network but can you monitor it for receive only. Thanks in advance.

If your scanner is capable of receiving DMR (check to be certain).... then YES absolutely. I use my Uniden BCD536 not only for monitoring a couple of local DMR repeaters, but also my DMR hotspot.

Only if you're within reception range of a hotspot or repeater. But if so, yes.

You can't use a hotspot without being a licensed ham, since they transmit.

You will only most likely be able to monitor the talkgroups that are full time on the local repeater. The Push To Talk groups need to keyed up to pass any traffic and just people monitoring via a scanner can't do this. If a local is on one of those groups you can receive it.

And just to note, you do not need a DMR ID to monitor, with a ham radio, or otherwise. You could very easily tune a Brandmeister repeater with your scanner or an appropriate ham radio, and have no issues.

Thanks everyone for the info. Haven't heard any DMR repeaters here in San Antonio, TX. Plenty of analog VHF and UHF repeaters and some simplex. Seen some other digital voice I assume is Wires-X or some other digital voice since DMR isn't converting the digital noise.

Heck, with a DMR scanner, you can listen to any DMR repeater you want. It doesn't matter if the repeater is on any network or whatever. Just search around and tune it in !
