• Effective immediately we will be deleting, without notice, any negative threads or posts that deal with the use of encryption and streaming of scanner audio.

We've noticed a huge increase in rants and negative posts that revolve around agencies going to encryption due to the broadcasting of scanner audio on the internet. It's now worn out and continues to be the same recycled rants. These rants hijack the threads and derail the conversation. They no longer have a place anywhere on this forum other than in the designated threads in the Rants forum in the Tavern.

If you violate these guidelines your post will be deleted without notice and an infraction will be issued. We are not against discussion of this issue. You just need to do it in the right place. For example:

bringing your scanner into a public place, another take :).

Hey there, first off, i do have a scanner, use it a lot in my pad and outside of the building, but only in the back area where me and my neighbors hang out. Now that said, i think this has a lot to do with preception of folks that have a radio (scanner or ham/buisness radio) on our belt, the usual person out there sees that and thinks, "hmmm, now what is THAT person up to, they a cop or someone trying to eavsdrop on something?" While i haven`t had any problems with my gear (i take it on the bus & train each year on the run to Dayton and listen to stuff for the whole trip, i use headphones so i don`t disturb other riders :)), i`ve been mulling over the distinct possability of leaving my radio stuff at home when i go out and about, as folks can get kinda odd when they see a scanner or ham radio (or other kinda radio for that matter). Again, methinks this is somewhat a preception thingy, folks ether look at ya like you`re a nut or a cop, ether of which isn`t a good thingy to have followin` ya around. And, some people are going to believe what they will and think you`re doing something nefarious just `cause you`ve a scanner or two-way radio with ya, ya can talk to these folks till the #338 train comes back to Milwaukee, but it won`t change `em, some folks think a scanner is a bad thing, and no amount of talking on your part is gonna change that unfortunately. There ya have it, my two cents :).

You realize that if you have a great data plan on your phone, run your scanner from home, route the audio to a PC running podcast software, make it so only you can get in (use Mac addresses) , and you can listen using your smartphone or phablet.

I`ve thought about doing that too, one of the reasons i might invest in a `536HP, i could use the app that`s (`sposed to) come with the unit for that :). N9NRA

Similar minds think alike. Remember you in the 21th century. If you do stuff like that, you tend to get noticed by the ISP and cellphone provider. Make sure you can run a server on that contract.

The ahhholes from my providers keep tabs on me. I drive them crazy with Bittorrent.

Earbud with the antenna and most of the scanner under my shirt. I can't think of one time that anyone even noticed the scanner. They think I am waiting for a phone call or listening to music like everyone else that is wearing earphones or a Bluetooth headset. I hear everything very clearly and don't get kicked out!

I manage to hide a full size pistol, 3 spare mags, an XTS5000 with a Commander II RSM with an earpiece..... wearing street clothes...

I don't wanna hear anyone say they can't hide a scanner....

:D

The question of 'why should I have to hide it?' is for another day...

I was stoked when the bluetooth adapter came out for the XTS series.... Everyone thought you just had a phone glued to your hip and a bug in your ear...

Wouldn't using a VPN thwart ISP spying?

Somewhat regularly I will take my scanner out in public, usually with custom-molded in-ear monitors that fit under my clothing very discreetly. Very few people notice it, let alone ask about it. And I like to keep it that way...

Until there is true Net neutrality, your provider will throttle your data until they are sure you aren't up to no good.

Silky really since most illegal activity isn't encrypted.

VPN bypasses that. It always gets higher priority routing than bittorrent. Use a good no logs provider and you can run whatever torrents and web server without anything ever happening.

Also there's really nowhere you'll get kicked out for having a scanner unless you act like a nuisance with it. Just use common sense, the places that do give trouble aren't worth going to anyways. I listen to Casino security all the time with earbuds on the Ws1040 and you know how paranoid those guys are. Never had a problem.
