Currently living in Buffalo, what scanner do I need. A review of the data base shows a cluster of different systems. Thanks

To listen to Buffalo PD you'll need a scanner that will do P25,

Uniden:
BCD325P2 (Portable)
BCD996P2 (Mobile/Base)

Whistler:
WS1040 (Portable)
WS1065 (Mobile/Base

Like what 62Truck said, if you want BPD, minimally you'll need a P25 conventional capable scanner, and those will do it no problem, as well as a few others. Thinking bigger, and beyond BPD if you get bored with just listening to them, you may want to purchase something (the Whistlers listed won't do this), something capable of DMR and/or NXDN. The use of DMR in the area is growing, as well as NXDN, in both public and private sector. UB PD, Mercy Flight and AMR use Saia's Con+ (DMR) TRS, Buff State PD uses a conventional NXDN system. There are others using it too, but those ones might grab your interest as well if your trying to monitor BPD and BFD. Just something to keep in mind.

I believe the best scanners currently available, as long as you do not need P25 trunked simulcast, are the BCD 436/536HP. The DMR and NXDN options work very well, unlike Whistler scanners that do not properly track DMR and NXDN trunking. The 436/536, while still having issues with P25 simulcast LSM do seem to handle it better than most other scanners.

I agree the Pro-197 is a good basic scanner if you just want Buffalo Police and Fire.
