Seems to work OK except Augusta PD is garbled and infrequent.

I used to live in ICT and am used to constant chatter in ICT PD. Is Augusta just quiet most of the time? Cant be.

I'm not sure but I think Augusta PD is encrypted. The last time I was through there I heard the same thing. It sounded like encryption to me.

The database here does not list Augusta PD as being encyrpted... For what it's worth, nothing in Butler County is showing encrypted. Maybe they hit the "secure" button (or whatever it's called) on their radios. Can't help you much, as I don't live in the area.

Butler County LAW is kind of strange on encryption. Some comms are encrypted all the time, some on certain shifts only, some only the field units are encrypted and dispatch is in the clear.

Almost all of the encryption is done at the radio level rather than the talkgroup level iin BU County. I think the only one that is group level encrypted is the PSAP talkgroup. I'm not sure sometimes if the encryption is intentional or they just forget to switch from secure to back to clear after talking the last time.

What's even worse, BU Emergency Management is almost always encrypted. I guess they think they need to keep the tornados top-secret.... I've even hear a Fireground Command encrypted!

I wonder if there are thrill seekers with scanners masquerading as storm chasers getting in the way of emergency vehicles. It has been a problem in the past here in Reno County.

Augusta doesn't encrypt their traffic. I believe they have the ability too, but I regularly hear all of their traffic. The only law enforcement agency in Butler County that uses encryption regularly is El Dorado. Dispatch is in the clear, but the officers are using encryption. I sometimes see encryption on Butler Law, but not as frequent as others. The Butler County PSAP talk group is always encrypted. EMA is encrypted most of the time.

You might be talking about the state interoperability talkgroups. Butler County has their own PSAP talkgroup. I have been working on identifying RIDs on the system, and even though the talk group is encrypted, I have seen traffic from Andover's PSAP, Augusta's PSAP, and the County PSAP.

I am a scanner listener and was wondering if radio traffic on talk group 2301 of the Kansas Digital system is your departments?

If it is, I am wondering why it is always encrypted and the general public cant hear it?

The talk group seems to be most active during weather events like tonight 9/25/2012. Personally I cant believe that any information being broadcast by your department at these times would compromise your department or personnel safety, and would warrant encryption.



If the talk group 2301 is not your departments I apologize but would appreciate it if you would point me to the right person to contact. If this is your talk group I would like to ask that you consider turning off the encryption on your transmitters. Either way I would appreciate a response on my questions.

I have no idea what numbers our talk groups might be on a scanner, all of our talk groups have names in our radios so someone with more digital radio savvy would have to answer that. What I can tell you is we do not run encryption on our “EMA OPS” talk group which is our weather operations talk group. We are active there as I type this due to the severe thunderstorm warning currently ongoing so whatever number that shows up as is where you want to listen for weather ops. Now that said we do have an administrative talk group as do other emergency services that is dedicated to “administrative” traffic and it is encrypted at all times however it’s not used for emergency situations, only when we have administrative traffic with staff or other officials do we use it. Have you talked to Mark over at the radio shack store in Derby? He seems to have the best grasp of what is what on the digital side of things. Other than him I would have to say someone over at MRS radio service in Wichita (they do our system maintenance) or someone at KDOT since they are the ones who set all the talk groups up when we built the system. Hope this helps. If you want us to help check what number you scanner sees for OPS just call us here at the office and if we are not busy on the radio system we can do a radio check and see what your scanner shows for a talk group number.

I hear Augusta all the time on my 106. I have my scanner set up for Butler simulcast and Wichita. I would be happy to share a clone or win500 file.

Pro 106 doesn't display the UID. If you did have that information then that Ron guy could find out who is using that TGID quite easily.
