Can the CA fish and game be heard on a scanner or do they have radio that can not be heard on a scanner.

Most any scanner can hear the Fish & Game wardens. You won't hear a lot of traffic. They are never as busy as the local police, sheriff, state parks or the CHP.

Be happy if you hear the wardens checking in early in the morning and signing "off duty" late in the afternoon. Other than that, it's usually sparodic license plate checks and vehicle registration data. Game wardens often mention what repeater they're using too...

When working a detail or with other units they often use simplex car to car so you wont hear this unless you are close and have a decent antenna.

I have not heard local DFG wardens on the air here in the eastern Sierra for about 5 years. Traffic is heard when wardens from other parts of the state come in for special circumstances such as the opening of fishing season and deer season. Otherwise the traffic is related to non-law enforcement wildlife management personnel engaged in a long term study of mountain lions and their prey.

While watching an episode of "Wild Justice" on the National Geographic channel I observed wardens using a push to talk cell phone of some type. I can't imagine the Nextel system covering all of Inyo and Mono Counties. There is just too much remote country for a cell phone based system to cover it. When I'm in other parts of the state, especially in southern California where it sounds like all the law enforcement traffic is on DFG's regular system.

Coincidently I'm watching Wild Justice right now with some wardens near Oroville on a normal patrol who are using the DFG net just in the manner they always have. So the mystery of the lack of warden traffic in the eastern Sierra remains unsolved.

SurComm (State Parks dispatch) in Perris dispatches for Fish and Game in Southern California and has considerable radio traffic on 151.43Mhz throughout the LA/Ventura area....

In addition to the VHF system, Wardens use issued Nextel portables which are frequently used for the dispatching of calls.

I sometimes here DFG traffic on the DFG channel when I'm in the area. But not much. I wonder if they are being dispatched out of INF in Bishop like the BLM?

When out of area wardens are working in the eastern Sierra they are dispatched by the Northern DFG/DPR center north of Sacramento.

Two channels: 151.415 and 151.430 have all of the regular radio traffic. The PL changes as to what mountain they're using, which is why you hear "Northern, 3324 on Bloomer", which lets dispatch know what mountain they're coming in on.

There's (IIRC) 3 dispatch centers: Northern in the Sac area; Central in Monterey, and SurComm in Riverside Co.

FYI
I have heard DFG#2322 on Leviathan Pk lately calling Northern and moderate traffic on Beckwourth DGF#2311 talking to Northern, mostly like was posted earlier (10-07/10-42 or 10-28/10-29 traffic only).
I dont know if the Leviathan Pk traffic was in Alpine or North Mono County.

Northern Mono County is in DFG Region 6 so their unit designators start with a six. Alpine County is in Region 2 and thus the unit designator you heard starting with a 2.

I don't think that matches up with what I saw/heard from watching a couple of those Wild Justice episodes last month:

****************
Intel from the 3 episodes of National Geographic Channel's 'Wild Justice' show that I just watched:

Approx 200 DFG Wardens statewide. Kenwood remote-mount mobile radios, & Motorola handhelds (XTS-5000s & some older models). Many wardens basically work out of their houses & just meet up in the field or at a CHP post. They pretty much set their own hours, based on what's going on. They receive a lot of tips thru their tipline. Most drive the standard for or GM dark green pickup trucks. UCVs I saw a couple years ago when I surveiled them surveiling someone were a Ford Expedition & a pickup truck with shell. They were using ----------------------, no CTCSS, for the surveillance.

Squad 3320 is based in Santa Clara county & headed by Lt. John Nores, whose radio identifier is 3320. His team has 332# callsigns. They are all part of a joint task force with Santa Clara SO called the Marijuana Eradication Team -- dressing up in cammies & looking for grow operations in various ares. 3320's Kenwood radio showed the LOMA PRIETA channel on it's display.

2230 squad is based in the Chico area, and serves 2 counties with 8 wardens. 2236 was warden Mike Beals.

One DFG aircraft is N37FG, which ID'ed as "Fish & Game 7"

The 5210 Squad covers LA County.

Specialized SFG units include the Special Operations Unit, and the "D-BEEP" unit, which is Delta-Bay Enhanced Enforcement Project ( Law and Order on the Delta : Special DFG Unit Helps Patrol Sloughs Looking for Poachers and Other Violators, but Sometimes Compassion Necessary - Page 3 - Los Angeles Times )

I know there is an resident warden that lives in the coleville area, you can see the dark green unit sitting on the property and also when i worked at the chevrolet dealership in minden we had the service contract for the CADFG being we were the nearest chevy dealer.(Caltrans District 10 out of woodfords contract also)
Its strange i have never heard region 6 units on my radios, waiting for sweetwater rptr to come on line the maybe i will here something.
In all time spent monitoring over time i have only heard CADFG on leviathan & beckwourth even though i am in range for scout pk,mt pluto & pine grove sites Sooooooooo? time will tell i do know that a mexican cartel canibis growing operation was discovered in alpine county,ca recently but i think it was on the HTNF
lands and comms were on alpine county sheriff net with USFS switched over to alpine sheriff net, i also hear a lot of CADOJ (Speach Inversion used most of time) in the alpine,el dorado, douglas county areas
(SLEDNET) operations (154.6800 mhz / 094.8 ctcss) anyway thats my 2 cents worth and tomorrow is another day.
FYI this cold weather is doing strange things to VHF highband simplex units heard 60 70 miles away while some local repeaters are 10-01 (Inversion/freezing fog etc) makes for interesting listening.

I have seen xts5000's on the show. What is the purpose of having thse if they use conventional analog channels? I guess it would be good so they could interop with other systems that utilize digital capabilities, but is there any other reason? I don;t believe they use P25 or ENC...
