Camp Kohler in Citrus Heights, just wondering what it is. I drive past it often and wonder what it's used for. I know some of its history, but not what it's used for now. Is there radio equiptment on site? Just curious.

As far as I can tell, it's all gone, mostly covered with a residential subdivision left. Are you saying you drive by somewhere & see some sort of gate/military compound? If so, can you pass an exact location? In its final years as an annex of McClellan AFB, it was a RADAR annex. Is it possible the RADAR is still there, used by the FAA?

You are close to the North Highlands Air National Guard Station, which has some combat communications units assigned.

Yep, it's an FAA radar for the whole Sacramento area. There's another one at Beale for the north area.

Yes, the RADAR is the only thing I see from the road. I looked on Google Earth and saw another building on the south end of the field, but I've not been over there to see what it is.

Camp Kohler

Camp Kohler was originally a detention center for Japanese Americans that were being moved. It was only active for about a month before changing over to the Army Corps of Engineers. A fire destroyed about 95% of the buildings and the area was later used for RADAR and other things. It was a large area. There are references to it in Citrus Heights but the actual location was in the Foothill Farms area, just off Roseville Road. I grew up, literally, on the other side of the tracks that run along side Roseville Road. Camp Kohler is also referred to as the Walerga Assembly Center. Google "Camp Kohler" and you can get more information about it. There are very few photos of it from what I can find, but I remember as a kid playing in the open fields and seeing old roads from the camp that had since been over-grown with weeds. The area is now mostly re-developed with homes and shopping centers, and a few industrial warehouses.

Not much digging at all. I only recently learned about it although I grew up, literally across the tracks from it and didn't even know about it. So I researched it, Googled "Camp Kohler," and this post came right up.

Just to the south of the RADAR, there is a huge concrete slab. I'm not sure if it's still there or not, but that used to be where the laundry facility was for Camp Kohler. There used to be a huge water tower just north of where the building was, and just south of the Radar. That water tower came down in the 80s. To the east on the other side of the field and further away from Roseville Road is a warehouse. I don't know if it's a private business or not, but I believe there was an administration building on the other side of the parking lot from where the warehouse is now. These links are to a couple posts I made on facebook with photos and other information.
