To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Can I program a freq to RX only and not TX?

Hi there,

I recently purchased a Vertex VX-451 and I am using CE115 v.1.10 software to program it. I am wanting to put in my local NOAA freq but I want to prohibit TX for obvious reasons. Is there an option to do this? I tried leaving the TX freq. blank and that didn't work, I tried entering 000.000 etc but get the out of freq. range.

Any help or suggestions is much appreciated!

Not familiar with your software but the program I use I would: Duplex = Off

Maybe you can set it to that?

No option for that (at least that I know of), I know Chirp uses that but my radio isn't supported in Chirp. :-(

I did that with my VX-4600 which uses the CE-115 software. I don't remember exactly what I did, but when I open the program it says ---.----- in the transmit column.

At first I figured if you just deleted the transmit frequency, it would be a receive only channel, like my Kenwoods... Not so with CE-115, even if you highlight and delete the transmit frequency, the software pulse with an 'out of frequency range' error... Very odd.

Even after searching the help files, the only references I see to either receive only or TX inhibit are for LTR or 5-Tone... All I can suggest is to set the transmit frequency to one of the MURS channels, with the proper deviation, and power level, or if you are a ham, set it to a simplex frequency, like 146.505 or 146.500 and set the power for only low.

Really odd... Another reason why I like my Kenwoods!

Wish they would document how to make an RX only channel...

Their programming software is kind of clunky, but luckily I do not have a lot to input! I did just program it and it will not TX on my NOAA channel now so at least that worked out! :)

Glad it worked out, learned something new... Still like how Kenwood allows you to simply delete the TX frequency to create a RX only channel better.

I hear ya, I own a few TK260G's and a TK272G and I like the simplicity of the KPG-56D software!

I own TK-2&380, TK-760, and a NX-700... Even the NX-700 is a breeze to program for analogue/conventional. I really like my Kenwoods, especially the 12 character dot-matrix display... Although my company issued handhelds are vertex, I would rather have Kenwood, vertex is still 'growing up' and stuck on segment displays with limited characters.

You can put a frequency in the transmit box that is either out of the radio's transmit range or at least out of the NOAA range. Not as good a choice, but better than interfering with the broadcast.

Thanks for this fix. I always set the TX to an oddball then locked the PTT.

Looks like you found a solution. I was going to suggest typing "blank" in for the tx frequency.

Vertex software is a pain. I'd buy a lot more of their radios if it was more user friendly. Too bad.

This was the first and last Vertex I'll buy. I don't like the software at all. Radio has an awful squelch tail and the software won't allow any adjustment beyond tail elimination.
