• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I was just playing around scanning and heard some weird stuff on the CB channels - I was picking up this guy on nearly every CB channel, he had some weird "spacey" music going in the background and was saying all crazy stuff - most notably "RED EYES RED EYES REEED EYES REDDD EYES". I heard people talking on one channel briefly and then it started up again and they said, "here's that *** again"
Is that normally what goes on in the CB band, or is this guy just some nutty ****? I guess you could call it preaching, but it wasn't about God by any means, just gibberish with an intermittent "wash them hands good wash em good boy Red eyes red eyes red eyes wash that *** too"

Very odd.

I'm sure there are those that will disagree with me (that's OK…) but that's pretty much what a lot of CB is. Sure, there's some local use that is "normal", but there's also a lot of useless crap. One of the reasons I don't have a CB in my truck anymore.

The guy you were picking up on nearly every channel? That's what happens when you get a radio "Peaked and Tuned" by some hack job guy down the street from the truck stop, then route it into an amplifier. They splatter all over the band and generally screw things up for everyone else.

In other words, welcome to CB.

The FCC has pretty much abandoned CB. People became enamored of CB and it's like cell phones now. The issuing of call letters was abandoned because few people used them anyway. The horse was out of the barn and the FCC didn't even bother to check the door. The barn door is still open and, in fact, the barn was remodeled and more door openings were created. There are no doors.

I have nothing official to base it on but I suspect less than 1/10th of 1% of all the work the FCC does is devoted to CB. They don't much care anymore and anything they try to do will be too little, too late.

I have a Cobra "everything's in the microphone" CB with a magnetic antenna that I sometimes put in the car when I travel. My logic is, when all else fails, maybe I can get some help with it. Fortunately, it's never come to that. On one trip to Wichita, I decided to set it up on channel 19 for the trip to see what was going on. I was disappointed. There was some traffic as I approached Tulsa but that quickly faded. I never even heard the truckers. Admittedly, it's not the most efficient setup but I would have thought there would be more, even if it was trash. Virtually all of the trip was on interstates and turnpikes. That was about 5 years ago and I haven't done it since. Come to think of it, I haven't even seen the CB in a while.

I guess I'll stick with the satellite, ham and scanner radios for entertainment.

I'll put a CB in the car for trips from PA to FLA. It has been useful. Last time I left it in the car for a couple of months. Daily traffic on ch19 from truckers on I-84. Other than that nothing.

I loved cb in the 60s and 70s. My house is right in the middle of I-95, I 295 and the Pennsylvania and New Jersey Turnpike. Truck stops everywhere in my area and industrial parks serviced by trucks.

Nothing on Channel 19 for several years now except for that one guy. Pretty psychotic, plays music all day, lots of profanity, sound effects and psychotic rambling.

I used to keep Channel 19 on my R75 but don't listen at all anymore

For me, CB represents fond memories from when I was a kid with my dad, my uncle and my brother. I always had one in my car since I started driving in 69.

CB has become the cesspool of two-way radio, and that's being disrespectful to cesspools! I haven't even monitored CB in many years, let alone having one in my car. I don't need the frustration of listening to these yahoo's shooting skip with their megawatt transmitters overriding the local stuff I'd be wanting to hear.

I don't consider CB to be a cesspool. In my opinion, a CB is an inert object. It can funnel various thoughts, opinions, and beliefs of society, nothing more, nothing less.
That's a whole lot more cerebral than CB deserves. It's not some sort of ethereal method of transporting philosophical ideas to the masses.

Every now and again if I'm really bored I'll scan the CB band just to see what's going on. Happens a few times a year.

Around here it's not too bad, fortunately; quite a few shippers and grain elevators still use it for coordinating truck traffic, and there are some people who get on and ragchew just like the old days. Apart from that not much going on.
