CCR instrumental (indirectly) in a car crash

So my best friend and spiritual brother picked me up for our AA meeting last Fri. night. He has a sizable GM pickup. Drops me off at home. I had to work the next day so I' m in the garage getting my tools together. I keep one of my CCR hoard there to listen to the locals. I hear the sirens and turn it on. First thing I hear is "patient in the pickup has priority."
I have a gift of premonition (this has happened before prior to a friend's murder) and got that really bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. I jumped in the car and wormed my way into the scene and, sure enough, there's his totally destroyed truck in the woods.
I won't rant on how stupid Pa. drivers are, I'd get permabanned. Suffice to say some f**k ran a stop sign right in front of him. It's a well known suicide intersection. He is in Geisinger with four broken ribs and collarbone.
If I didn't have the radio I'd never have found out. He lives alone and because of that radio, I was able to take care of things (securing the house, etc.) Otherwise there's a good chance I'd never have found out.
On a controversial note, I hope our county *never* goes digital of encrypted.

Good story, after I've seen my family and I know they're driving home and I hear a fire call for a bad wreck on the interstate, I always worry, usually give them a text to make sure everything's okay.

Nothing wrong with calling Pennsylvania drivers bad drivers, reckless, aggressive and always taking chances, blow stop signs all the time, I take my car into the auto body shop tomorrow to repair my front end after I collided with a moron who ran a stop sign on May 4th. I'm a slow pokey driver and drive the maniacs crazy, was going 25 miles per hour which is the speed limit on the residential street full of kids. The other car took out a Township street sign and a homeowners fence. He never reported the accident so I had to get the accident report from police records division.

After the 18-year-old driver cursed me out in every way possible like it was my fault, I didn't have a stop sign, he did, I told him that if he kept it up I was going to call a tow truck to come take him, personally, away. He got a ticket for the stop sign and I was not at fault and using his insurance to repair my car as I'm sure your friend is doing the same. That's how it works in PA.

If your area police is not encrypted, you are one of the few places left in Pennsylvania, I'm in the Philly/ Bucks area.. but you always have the fire radio to hear about extrications and bad wrecks.

Good intuition going out to check out the situation. Be thankful.

Thanks, appreciate the kind words. I'm in Union county, still analog along with Snyder and Lycoming.
I fret every time my wife gets in the car. Doesn't help that I have an anxiety disorder. Anybody hurts her or the dogs, or worse, the worse would get me life in prison, let's leave it at that.

There is really something wrong in our town... stupidity is everywhere, but here it is stratospheric. I don't know if it's something in the water, chemtrails, whatever but it should earn its own study. If I knew this, I wouldn't have moved here. It's that bad.

@Falcon9h thanks for sharing.

Very similar sentiments as to driving per your comments as well as what @trentbob relates.

I like being close to home. Have let the wife know I won't be traveling any distance by car other than the trip to Bucks County, about 105 miles/2 hours 20 minutes, only because it's where my daughter lives. Told daughter I won't be driving to NYC anymore, because sooner or later she'll want to meet up at Citi Field. A trip to the Scranton area once in awhile and that would do it for me.

Yup... same here. I only go out if I really have to. Moved from NJ in 2004 and never had the trouble there that I do here. I don't know if that's changed but felt much safer back home. But that was before texting and so-called smartphones. But let's just say the education level here is... problematic.

Well, not what I expected from the title but interesting. When I was in college I monitored a motorcycle chase that seemed to be headed right to the campus. The chase almost ended at the campus but continued several more miles with the cycle colliding with an big truck. Nearly fatal. Sure enough it was a classmate in the aviation major. Why did he run? No m/c license.
Over four decades I've often heard things involving people I knew. Hope your "brother" heals completely.

I got into the radio hobby while living in Lackawanna county. The city and county still using basically analog FM four decades later. From your mention of Geisinger it sounds like you are in that are. I think that the agencies there can't justify the need or cost of moving to trunking although the PA state system covers the area and unfortunately PSP is encrypted.

The Texas county where I live went in about ten year steps from all VHF-FM to analog trunking, to P25 trunking with partial encryption, to full encryption a few months ago. Not even the news media can hear what's going on now 😞
