• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Looks like the CCRs have made it to the off road world.

Rugged Radios: Headsets, Intercoms, 2-Way Racing Radios and Communication for Motorcycles, Offroad, Circle Track, Aviation, Drag Racing, NASCAR, Police, and more...

Saw this company on today's episode of Extreme Off-road. The rep from the company stated how much better these are than CB. As in you can have your own private channels that no one can hear and you not hear them. Advertised as a commercial band radio with no mentioning of licensing. Also loved the 20 mile range he said they were capable of.

LOL, obvious Baofeng rebadge.

20 miles is far more plausible with 5 watts of TX power than 0.5, but still pretty unlikely unless you're going mountaintop to mountaintop, or are on open water or the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Was just poking around their site, I can get a catheter and a CCR too!. That will be handy when communicating 20 miles away non-stop.

Rugged Radios has a pretty long history of selling programmed radios with the "off road" frequencies in them. Appears to be zero effort to properly license users. When I asked one of them about it, they tried to brush the subject off.
Not surprising they've jumped on the CCR bandwagon, my only question is "what took them so long?"

I was wondering what "off road" frequencies that are programmed. MURS would not be legal with that power and bandwidth on the narrow freqs but I bet those are in the VHF model and GMRS in UHF model. I just hope they are not choosing random frequencies.

They have several password protected frequency lists. Radio Frequency Lists : Rugged Radios: Headsets, Intercoms, 2-Way Racing Radios and Communication for Motorcycles, Offroad, Circle Track, Aviation, Drag Racing, NASCAR, Police, and more...

BF Goodrich, Goodyear and a few of the Baja 1000 channels get used. Since Baja/Weatherman channel is used in Mexico I was never able to find an FCC license. The BFG and Goodyear channels are owned by their respective companies. FCC Rules are pretty clear about who gets to use channels, and a 3rd party assigning these channels to individual users doesn't pass the test. Obviously BFG and Goodyear don't care.

RuggedRadios seems to use it as a way to sell radios, including (at least it used to) selling 100 watt Kenwood TK-790's to customers loaded with channels.

Not the first time. Last year I was watching a TV program called "Colony" Their police/special task force members were using Baofeng UV5R radio. I think the Baofeng name might have been removed but no other effort was made to disguise the radio being used. No doubt they were the 8 watt versions!

Bumping this thread up again as I just came across the RuggedRadios website and had a good chuckle at the CCRs they'r selling for 5x the price. I called them up and whoever answered the phone provided me with a username "rugged" and password "radios" to access those frequency lists. The radios appear to come programmed with seemingly random VHF and UHF land mobile frequencies and tones, plus GMRS and MURS frequencies as well. Included on each of their frequency lists is this disclaimer:

Content provided is included for the sole purpose of providing educational information on a passive basis. Frequencies shown have been compiled from various sources. It is the end user’s repsonsibility [sic] to observe FCC regulations for proper use and programming of any radio frequency."

After reading around on various 4x4 and off road forums, people are happily buying these insanely marked up radios and basically laughing at the feeble attempt RuggedRadios makes to educate users on why proper licensing is needed. Here's what the $85 RH-5R (a re-badged Baofeng UV-5R) comes programmed with:

Yup, that's what I found a few years ago when I looked.
They had 50 and 100 watt mobiles programmed with GMRS, FRS, Marine and MURS channels.

Zero effort made to abide by the FCC rules.

It's all about making a buck, and the customers don't know the difference.

I see one channel in the lineup is marine channel 73 for port operations and several others that would be impossible to get a license for. I suspect they have transmit enabled on the weather channels. What a bunch of morons.
