To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Anyone know what pins I need to connect to on a CDM 1250 for audio to record? I know connecting to the speaker pins are going to produce an overloaded output. Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

Pin 11 is RX Audio Out. It is partially programmable (from the install manual): There are two possible outputs: (1) Discriminator Audio, and (2) Continuous filtered RX audio. The nominal output for Discriminator Audio is 330mV rms at 60% deviation and for Filtered Audio 600mV rms at 60% deviation at 1kHz.

In the CPS: Radio Configuration --> Accessory Configuration --> RX Audio Type
Select either Flat Audio or Filtered Audio.

Pin 7 is Ground.

The pin 11 is correct and the setting of filtered audio is the way to go. I would use an in series capacitor of say 1.0 uf to block the DC bias voltage you will find on pin 11. Not knowing the circuit that your going to connect up to, it would be a good idea to include the capacitor.

if the level is a bit high you can add in a inline resistor of about 47K . I use the filtered audio out in several different aplications. you can also set up the CSQ pin to toggle on receipt of a signal to trigger your recorder.

i would use pin 1 speaker (-) instead of ground, replacing an audio amp is not cheap nor easy. i can't remember for 100% if the amp uses an isolated ground like other models of M radios do, but if it does using hard ground will damage it.

if using pin 11 for the audio pickup dont use pin 1 as the ground. The audio is a balanced load and the audio - connection is not a ground. use pin 7 as suggetsed in the posting above.

I think you are right for two reasons: First, we have a Zetron Model 19 Simplexor and a custom tone system on our base station. It takes Audio from Pin 11 (but they are using the Discriminator signal for some reason) and uses Ground on Pin 7. Pins 1 and 16 are not used at all for this application.

Second, the CDM install manual specifically warns against grounding either Pin 1 or Pin 16, but doesn't specify any further details except that these pins are the isolated output of the audio amplifier.

Both points would seem to confirm that one should avoid using 1 & 16 for anything other than an external speaker.
