• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

CDM Cdm1250 VHF call alert

Hello all, I am looking for some guidance. I have a CDM1250 VHF mobile that was taken out of service by our department several years ago when the county went to the state VIPER system. However the call alert paging is still done using the vhf system. Where I live, my pager does not receive well enough to alert most of the time making it virtually useless when I’m home. I am wanting to use my CDM1250 as a call alert system for my home, but I do not have access to any programming software or any operating system old enough to run the software if I did have it. The radio is already programmed with the correct frequencies, but I believe I would need to change the settings in the programming and possibly add the alert tones to the frequency. I already have a vhf antenna (several actually as I am also a general class amateur operator), have the CDM powered up and receiving properly. I just need to know how to make it act like a fire department pager and be silent until we get a call, then it would tone alert and open the squelch for the dispatch message. If anyone can guide me through this or if internal programming is required, anyone is willing to program the alert settings in the radio, I would be glad to ship to and from as well as compensate them. Thank you in advance for any information or guidance you can offer.

You'll need the programming software to do what you want.

And you'll need an older laptop to do the programming.

If the radio was taken out of service by your dept, there is the outside chance that the programming therein contains a paging channel.

Have you powered the radio on, and perused the current channels/zones in the unit?

Yes that’s what I figured would be the case, and why I was hoping someone here would have such software and computer and would be willing to assist me. I’d gladly pay shipping to and from, and of course I’m willing to discuss a donation of appreciation. Doesn’t make sense for me to purchase the software, a 10-12 year old operating system and interface cables for a one time use.

I was issued this radio when it was new and placed into service. The radio has the correct frequencies and transmits/receives as it should. The county switched to the VIPER system and now only uses VHF for initial dispatch only and tone alert. It is possible that the radio is capable of being set to a silent monitor/alert with the current programming but I have no idea how to dig through it to find out. I’m spoiled by Rt systems and the like kind of programming. I’ll see if I can search up an operator manual and try to investigate the menus and see if I can find anything.

That's what you say now, but take it from one who did the same thing: you'll find yourself making changes, resetting Priorities, changing CTSS, and changing frequencies, and possibly pager tones, etc. down the road. And the amount of money to pay for shipping, "donations," etc., will be much greater than the cost of a second-hand laptop and cable.

Send me a PM. I built an alarming system using a CDM in the past Seen HERE, I could make your radio alert for the tone, without all the additional bells and whistles that I had on mine
