Hi,

I've downloaded RTLTool with the intention of changing my serial numbers (having 6 SDRs with the serial number 1 is starting to cause issues)

I can't seem to get the tool to detect any of my dongles. I try them all individually and they work fine in various programs (sdr#, dsdplus, sdrtrunk) however as soon as I fire up RTLTool it just doesn't find a dongle.

Any ideas?

I followed this tutorial and was able to get mine to work, if you haven't seen it give it a read and see if you are missing a step.

Just be aware that you may brick the device. I did flashed all my devices and all went ok except of one. This one in particular is detected and is present in the available devices list but just can't be used. Tried to flash it again with no luck.

FWIW, with the concern over "bricking", I retrieved and saved the existing contents of the eeprom with rtl_eeprom -r dongle_name.bin, just so there were more options for recovery if there was a problem. I also made sure there was only one dongle attached to the machine at a time, so there was no question about which one I was using.

I then used rtl_eeprom -s nnnnnnnn to write a new serial number to the device. A subsequent dump (rtl_eeprom -r dongle_name_new.bin) of it showed that it changes the 16 bytes (it's stored as Unicode, little-endian) starting at position 0x37 in the 256-byte EEPROM.

Is 'rtlsdr.dll' still in the folder with RtlTool.exe and libusb-1.0.dll?
Absence of this file will see the drop-box greyed out.

I ended up getting it - user error. As soon as I downloaded the RTLSDR++, opened the SDR Catalog and then drag and dropped my RTLtool files into that folder, it all worked well. Handy being able to finally label all my SDRs
