I will be vacationing on Kiawah Island in July and don't have 800mhz capability.
I was wondering if there is a VHF or UHF dispatch and /or simulcast freq. that I can monitor? I only want to monitor fire/EMS traffic.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Seems like when I visited there several years ago, 155.145 was used for tone-out of St. Johns FD, which covers Kiawah. I don't have a tone listed, so maybe that's not correct. I know for certain that all ops were on the county's 800MHz TRS.

I'll be there again in mid-May and I can report more details.

EMS is only dispatched on 800MHz.

When I lived there in 2001-2004 the VHF for St. Johns was still active for Tone Out, but all the comms were on the 800.... And now they are moving mainly to the ASTRO-25.

Simulcast ? follow-up

Thanks for the info. so far. I'll be going down in late July.
Are all of the stations staffed 24?, if not what freq. do they activate pagers on? I haven't seen any 800 mhz pagers.

In the last post I was refering to Charleston County dispatch freq.
Thanks for the Island dispatch confirmations, I had read the database but didn't know what fire company "ran" the Island.

St. Johns FD is the department that covers the island. It's link on the site www.sconfire.com states they use a paid staff. Their website is password-protected for some reason, so I don't have more details. Assuming they are paid, they may not use paging at all.

EMS covers the island for medical calls, with St. John's FD as first responders. They don't use paging that I'm aware of. Some of their ops are now on the Charleston Co. P25 system and are digital.

Kiawah security uses 461.450/171.3 PL
Kiawah Resort transportation uses 461.850/173.8 PL
Seabrook Island security uses 463.525/734 DPL

Both islands have other UHF frequencies licensed for other uses, like Water and Sewer, golf courses, and the like, but none that I found active when I visited.

At least this was accurate when I was last there several years ago.

Charleston County Comms

Charleston County Rescue is the only agency in the county that still uses non 800 Mhz communications. (Lincolnville has some 400mhz repeater they use randomly and NCPD VHF repeater is still up, but nobodys listening)

You can listen to Charleston County Rescue on VHF Channels 4 and 5. (listed under Charleston Counties Page)

Until recently you could also listen to CCEMS ch.3 but they have since removed most VHF radios from most ambulances.

Kiawah and Seabrook use there respective 800 channels in moderation. Kiawah Security and Beach patrol both use the (1) 800 channel allocated for them (Kiawah 1)

Kiawah Security still has 400 mhz radios but they seldom use them.

St. Johns tones out 24/7 on the Analog 2822 system (unless somethings changed very recently)...they do have Digital-VSELP TG's on the old 2822 system for ADMIN use. Nothing APCO 25 that I know of????

I hope this helps.....

OK thanks for news that the VHF is gone... And within the next 6 months expect ALL the CC County Fire/Rescue agencies to have usage of the new ASTRO-25 system.

I've been at Kiawah this weekend. Note the changes to Palmetto 800 site frequencies in the other thread.

St. Johns is only dispatched on 800MHz, no VHF freq is active as far as I can tell.

The Kiawah talkgroup on the Charleston Co system (analog) is active. It may be Security. The UHF freqs I listed before for security does not seem to be active. 461.850/173.8 is active with resort ops (transportation and the like). Previously posted Seabrook frequency is accurate and active.

The new P25 digital trunked radio system is tough to monitor from here, reception-wise. I'm only getting about 80% decode rate. There's a cell site with multiple providers about 1/4 mile from my location that I think is causing some desense of my radio on 800MHz.

I'm using a PRO-96 with the radioshack 80MHz antenna.
