So I'm scanning all of the 97 AAR Railroad frequencies, and my Radtel RT-4D keeps stopping on AAR-005 with a repeater that sounds like EMS calls. I search Connecticut, Mass., and NY on RR for anything. Nothing. No PL tone so all it comes up with is the Railroad data. So I Google "160.185 EMS" and wow there it is. Chester County rebroadcast of dispatch. I wonder how they got the OK to be on a RR frequency? Anyway, loud and clear up here in Connecticut.

Sounds like some tropospheric ducting going on based on the distance. See how long you are able to continue receiving the EMS comms.

You know since you're a RR premium subscriber you utilize RR's frequency data search to look up your findings. Much more trustworthy than Google IMHO. Though unfortunately 160.185's days are numbered. Per this post the channel is slated for retirement by the end of 2025 or 2026. They discontinued the east and west fire rebroadcasts on 159.600 & 159.735 last year.

Yes I did that first, but with no PL to go by, I got zero results except for Railroad data when searching my Tri-State area. When I did a nationwide search on RR, I got too many results to go through. I didn't expect it to be in Pa. lol.

What PL/DPL/NAC ?

Here is one potential - but likely long removed from use

Any/all frequencies can be (if agreed upon) shared, especially the Railroads, many have been shared for years
161.2200 comes to mind as a local Ambulance Service since the 70/80's in Boston

you can likely get an idea on which direction based on the APRS VHF Mapping

No tone. That made it a little harder to locate. Still receiving it nicely

I'm not sure that you read through his entire post. Some key points I believe you missed:

"No PL tone"

"So I Google "160.185 EMS" and wow there it is. Chester County rebroadcast of dispatch."

He already identified the source, and it is CSQ.

When querying the entire RRDB for 160.185, there are only 59 results. When applying the text filter for "EMS", only two results are left, one of which is Chester County EMS Dispatch listed as CSQ (explaining the lack of a decoded PL/DPL). Took me a few seconds, not really that complicated.

Key points were not missed, the reply was being written and researched for data during his reply o_O :coffee:

Huh? You made your post 2 hours after he provided all of that info in his initial post to start this thread. Not making much sense here. No shame in admitting you missed the key info before replying, it happens to the best of us from time to time. ;)

It's only 165 miles as the crow flies. I fully expect to hear it under normal conditions seeing that they are using 250 watts. :D
Nice! Sounds like you have good elevation at your location, so it very well could be you are hearing this under normal conditions. Keep us posted of any changes.

To be fair, I would have guessed the time delay was waiting for the ULS to load…….

Yes, I am still receiving them the same. I am at 130 feet above sea level and I can throw a rock at Long Island Sound, well almost anyway. A few hundred feet from the water. Using a Diamond X-500HNA 2M-440 up 15 feet. I see the transmitter for that Pa. station is up a total of almost 300 ft. ASL.
The propagation map is showing up pretty much all green right now. Not much troppo right now

Jealous of this. I’m in a different part of the state and remember being able to pick up Chesco up fairly regularly in the 90’s and early 2000’s. I miss hearing them but I guess it’ll be lost for everyone sooner or later anyway.
