Will normal fire dispatch be encrypted????

Not sure, but the jury is still out. The next time we hear something on the new Digital frequencies related to Homeland Security, maybe we shouldn't be notifying the press which occured during the latest large-scale event. That will almost guarantee encryption...

If the radios (XTS5000's) Came with encryption (wether that be DES-XL, OFB or AES-256), why not make use of it? If it makes comm's more secure, they should go for it.

But I will agree that the VHF system already in place works well.

So the CFD is not going to digital yet? I'm bringning my 1250 up since I don't have a handheld scanner. I'll be up there in Oct and Nov for 2 weeks. Is CFD still on VHF or UHF. I know the CPD is on UHF

So the media cannot hear the racist comments the firfighters make, as happened a few years ago.

It wasn't the media...it was one of our own with a "hidden agenda", who is no longer on the Chicago Fire Dept.

Think encryption has nothing to do with the racist stuff. Some big and small cities are going to encryption keep people from hearing in.
