Why is it taking so long for CPD to switch to thier new radio system!? I've heard talk about this for some years now...

Chances of this happening soon is slim to none. I would say probably at least 2-3 years or more. City of Chicago is just plain broke and doesn't have millions to spend on a new radio system that is working fairly well.

I wouldn't exactly say that. Have you been listening to the north side Zones as of late? Zone 1.."can you tell me what City-Wide 2 is on these new radios"..? ..."Wait, let me check....it's now B-11". Hmmm, seems like it used to be position C-2. So i'd say, new radios are coming out, appear to be XTS 5000, and they're digital capable, as CFD is using them already. Keep your ears open to clues if you listen regularly.

towers

I have a friend on CFD and the city has approved for towers to be 20 feet higher than the ordinance of 30 foot towers. The towers will be 50 foot high per police because they felt they needed to be higher due to trees and other obstructions.

Hope they check with the FAA on that. Some areas, I assume you could do that, but not everywhere.

Didn't CPD already do a 1 zone test on digital for a week or 2 and they ended up scrapping it? That was last year some time I believe. Either way, they would still have to do testing citywide, zone by zone. I bet that would take at least 6 months to a year or more. Plus 10,000 some odd portables to buy if they havn't done so already.
