• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I am trying to peogram a Baofeng UV-82 with chirp to listen to (and later transmit) a local repeater the particulars are...
Frequency- 147.330
Tone. 123.0
Offset-+0.6
My problem is that I can receive all communications from the repeater on an old police scanner, but only a receive light on the
handheld.
My problem with Chirp is that when I try and program the info, ie (frequency. tone, crosstalk, offset etc there is always a tonesq.
I cannot find anyway to disable tonesq. I have been told that my problem may be the tonesq, have watched all videos, they only
cover correct cables and copy and pasting. checked outChirp, cannot find a way to disable the tonesq feature.
please, any suggestions would be so appreciated.

cannot find a way to disable the tonesq feature.

Sounds like the repeater requires a tone to open it but is either not transmitting a tone or is transmitting a different tone. Try setting the "Tone Mode" to "Tone" instead of TSQL and see what happens.

You should be able to determine what (if any) tone is being transmitted with your scanner. Set the tone mode to "Search".

Don't rely on youtube videos to learn anything about Chirp.

Look at their web site. Documentation - CHIRP
Specifically Memory Editor Columns page. MemoryEditorColumns - CHIRP

Go to the View menu, check Hide Unused Fields and uncheck Smart Tone Modes.

Set Tone Mode to Tone. Not TSQL.
Set Tone to 123.0 or whatever tone you need.
ToneSql
and Cross Mode should then be blank.

First of all, not all amateur repeaters use CTCSS on the output. Also, you don't need CTCSS decode it to receive. Split tones are very rare on ham repeaters and many radios can't do them (none of my Yaesu radios can). Baofengs can do split tones interestingly. Since you aren't licensed yet, just program the output frequency of the repeater with no tones. When you get your license you can add the input tone.

Another step would be to find the web site for the club that owns the repeater. They usually list the tones on the web site. Last, get in touch with them. If you want to get your license, they can help you.

Finally, ditch the Baofeng and get a real radio.

Changed the tone mode to tone at 123.0 and the repeater comes in loud and clear. you people are great, I have pretty much figured out
that youtube is only good for copying and paste and other computer info. not specifics about Ham radio.
I do agree about Baofeng, but it was just a way to getting familiar with things like chirp and some of the basics that are not covered
in the technician study. I have been in touch with the local club, but because of covid they are not very active right now.
I can now listen to their virtual meetings when I am away from the scanner. While waiting on test I am studying for the general. Again, many thanks
