CHU Canada coming in here at a wobbly 7-9s. I always wondered why CHU was always so weak and thanks to that NASWA site I learned it's because CHU transmits out of Ottowa at a paltry 10,000 watts! To get it here at all is a feat:)

Hi Ridgescan:

It gets worse! CHU Canada is actually on 3 frequencies....3330 khz (3 kw), the 7850 khz one (10 kw), and 14670 khz (3 kw). So yeah, getting it on the west coast is often a challenge. The NRC (which runs CHU) actually was thinking of setting up an Alberta transmitter for CHU three years back, to better cover the West...but so far, it's just Ottawa.

My CHU reception? Pretty good, but I'm in Ontario.
3330 is audible all 24 hours.
7850 is on at 0000 UTC, but fades out about 0600 UTC. It comes back about 2000 UTC forward to 0000 UTC
14670 is so weak I don't even bother recording it.

Keep in mind that the 14 mhz outlet won't propagate once Ottowa is in darkness....73 Mike

It's still on 14670. I'm able to hear it right now, but not terribly strong.

Time stations are in something of a limbo - they're both broadcasters (of a kind) and utilities. I've applied the NASWA standard here that says if a station is a time station, it's a utility. If one of the mods doesn't like it, s/he can move it! 'Nuff Said!

I like to think of them as a utility-because we utilize them not only for time coordination, but also for standard carrier tuning. They also broadcast utility weather too right?
