• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

My family got our first license back in mid 1975. I was listening to a discussion a bit ago where an individual stated that he had to take a test to get his citizen band license. Was there any time from 1975 back that there was a this testing requirement.

I don't remember there being any testing, just fill out the appropriate form and send in the correct fee and after a bit your license came in the mail.

No. Filled out the application, sent it in with the fee, received the license in the mail. That was in the 60's

Same here, application plus fee equaled license. I think it was $20 but after all these years I wouldn't want to bet the farm on that. CB radios came with a license form, or you could get one from a number of sources I can't remember at the moment either.

Most CB applications came in the box with the radio. If not they could be obtained free by contacting the government printing office with the form number. It was $20 for 5 years, but there was NO testing. Got mine in 1967.

My very first call letters were 17W3288 (before they realized their mistake and changed it to KGI3126). I never took a test

If you want to make it look official, or are just a bit nostalgic, you can print this and fill it out for hanging on your wall.

Total waste of tax payer's money, as the FCC so often is. Added to that, all the back-room deals. Yet another reason for another Federal organization that should be done away with.

I agree that they're not all that well organized but doing away with it? I can't fathom the confusion if people didn't have some sort of model to go by and, at least occasionally, punishment for deviating from it.

They're not doing much of that now. It's been pretty much a free for all. Never read anything constructive that they've been doing.

You're right. Much of it is a free-for-all, however, remember they're responsible for more than just amateur, FRS and GMRS.

Same with TV, Broadcast Radio, etc. Anything seems to go today, and if not, it goes unpunished. Then there's Ajit Pai, and all the BS over neutrality.
