I have an analog Uniden BC780HLT scanner and I find that my receiver is not picking up Citizen Band transmissions anymore. Has the AM citizen band gone digital or is it just no longer active? Reception on other bands are fine.

No. CB has not went digital. You can lay money CB won't go digital either.

A. There are too many CB's floating around in the US

B. The FCC don't really give a flyin' sack about CB anymore.. Sure it was enforced heavily in the 70's and 80's, but after about 98, FCC CB busts dropped drastically. Granted, there are still your ratchet jaws who act like crackheads that end up bringing the FCC to town..

I was on lower sideband this morning before work and held a quick QSO with a gentleman in Maine.

Hi CB and all,

Trucker reports from CT indicate the same happened there as in NJ. CB in "the good old days" when it was a licensed service was worthwhile and that's where I cut my teeth on crystals and tubes but I digress. Then along came C.W. McCall, TV and the movies, every moron and his uncle idiot just HAD to git wun uv those see bee things and none bothered getting a license let alone abide by the rules. Chaos ensued, basically an overpopulation issue exemplified by the famous rat experiment, they went crazy and killed each other off. Here in central NJ as in many other places there's nary a CB signal to be heard, the band is stone cold dead.

It wouldn't be K1MAN now would it? (;->)

There are a few reasons for this. One, the CB bands may not be as active where you are as they were in the 70's and 80's.

Second, most scanners and the antennas supplied with them are not very efficient in picking up CB frequencies. An antenna designed for the CB band would help picking up CB frequencies somewhat, but at the expense of reception in higher bands.

As another unfortunate outcome of CB use and the "Smokey and the Bandit" mentality, the ability to speak understandable English seemed to diminish - along with the general IQ of the user. Everyone seems to want to sound like they're sitting in an Alabama outhouse - even the guys from New England. Bye Y'all--- see ya on da flip-flop! I BE GONE!

CB is indeed still in use. I hear traffic on my BR330T often (I live within a couple miles of Interstate 57 and several truck plazas). But, unlike the past where conversations could be heard on many channels from non-truckers, most traffic is isolated to 19. The only other active channels are for a few distribution warehouses in the area that operate on 5, 7, 8 and 25 for picking up/dropping loads. And, the occasional truckers that want to "take it to another channel" to continue a conversation that started on 19.

lol, I heard someone on the Chicken Band a couple weeks ago using tactical callsigns like "Adam-1" and "Delta-4"... I think it was our Milita/CERT/Civil War re-enactment Explorer post doing parking lot patrol at some school event

Look Mr. Elk Bruce, I would appreciate the cut downs about my state (Alabama) be taken elsewhere. For your information, we have a city in North Alabama called Huntsville which is heavily involved in the space program. Did you know that? Helen Keller, another famous person was from Muscle Shoals. Auburn University is one of the leading institutions of higher education when it comes to Veterinary Medicine, agriculural science. Futhermore, we have a person who was a brilliant Paramedic in his day, that posts on this very website. Visit his awesome website www.dave911.com He learned all of this from scratch. No tutors, No degree, all self taught. Pretty smart eh? I've all of that to say this. Sure, we have some less fortunate folks just like you do, but how about knocking off the blanket statements? We are tired of that here in Alabama. Wishing you and yours a great night, and 73's

I still hear CB on mine, listening to it now on my 780 (side note - it's an "X"LT, not "H"LT, even though the X looks exactly like an H!)

Have you heard CB before with the antenna you're using? Also, do you use the CB search feature? (press and hold SRCH until the menu comes up, then rotate the knob until you get to the CB RADIO search bank).

My guess is everything is fine; things are probably just slow.

As I sit here listening...what is the deal with the echo mics??

Lighten up. You're far too sensitive about things and only draw needless attention to your apparant self-importance. Yes, each state has its advantages and pride. Each has things that do not live up to our ideals -mine included and everyone has a good laugh. We have Princeton University, International Research Centers and our heroes too along with aging industries, urban pollution and "Pineys" just you have your lesser desired reputations and "Duke Boys". Get over it and take in the spirit in which it was given. You'll live longer and be much happier. Thin skins here don't last long and less forgiving than your 30 posts may have indicated.

Since it's not important why not use your state? It's quiet evident that after 856 posts that you could enlighten us with something more than good 'ole boy jokes.

I'd rather be in an Alabama outhouse than a New Jersey penthouse
