If they are like the rest of the railroads, we use a mix of Kenwood NX210 and Icom 3161...The same goes for the locomotive but with the "mobile" versions shoved into a GEM or other "standard RR" housing.

The ones around here (Southern Ont) are equipped with radios (unknown to me). However in 15 years of rail fanning I have the CN Police frequency in scanner and have only ever seen them use cell phones. Never herd a peep on the radio.

Do they talk to local county or area State Police dispatch on local public safety channels?

I live in the USA in Waukesha, WI and we have a CN main line that goes through our city and it has 20-30 trains a day that travel through and I occasionally see the CN police and I have heard them talk to train crews on the railroad frequency 161.295 AAR79 which is the frequency CN uses on the Waukesha Sub but I heard them also using 161.205 AAR 73 (frequent Railroad police frequency) in analog mode to talk to other officers when they were doing trespass enforcement and crossing gate enforcement, they also have access to the statewide trunked radio system and also monitor local police channels but I have never heard them talk on local channels, I know they also use cellphone push to talk capability extensively

There's reference to ch.35 (AAR 75) in the database. Been monitoring it for a year. It's been silent.
However, I believe CNRP only have one constable in Halifax, so the cell phone notion is more likely here too.

The only time I've ever heard CN Police was years ago when they were investigating a report of a trespasser. They voiced out on the road channel that they were walking down the right of way from a particular mileage.
