To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:
Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.
If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.
To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.
The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).
This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.
I'm new to the CB radio world and I acquired a cobra 148 f gtl from the pictures I've looked at this thing has some sort of modifications to it wondering if anybody can tell me exactly what is going on inside this radio
Without seeing a before and after picture I can't say what's different.
But sometimes what seems to be some sort of tinkering is actually changes made by the manufacturer on the production line to modify earlier versions of the product to correct or improve something while not scrapping the old material.
It does power up I'm having trouble finding a 5 pin mic. there aren't any cb shops around where I live at least not with in a 100 miles lol so I'm working on resourcing one on the internet until then I won't know for sure if it really works or not but I heard that the Cobra 148f GTL back in the day was one of the best radios to have is that true???
I have an older Cobra 148 GTL. There are 4 pin to 5 pin adapters for sale on ebay; also 5 pin mics for sale for the 148 & 148F. I was able to increase the output power of mine to 12 watts AM/ 20 watts PEP SSB. Good luck with yours; I have mine packed away as I purchased the Uniden 980; one for base and the other for mobile as they can scan the channels.
Wired for 5 pin Cobra CB radios such as the 142 148 2000GTL (select generations of 148 were 4 pin), and many other! Rugged construction with heavy duty coiled cable! WIRING:PIN 1 - Shield / GroundPIN 2 - AudioPIN 3 - TX PTTPIN 4 - RX.
