• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Hello All: Ok here we go with a tread telling the radio manufactures what we want in a base Station Radio.

I suggest the Base Radio be manufactured with the ability to add in modifications and allow easy Trouble Shooting designed in Test Points and a real world test procedure. Radio size not to worried about.

A Great Looking Radio, not some goof ball looking pile. Have a group of testers test the radio and its "Button Ology Friendly" value of operation. Don't allow software engineering to design the "Button Ology" operating functions, have a adult engineering supervisor watch over these folks.

Front Speaker, with plenty of Volume and a optional switch for head phones or speaker.

A really good noise blanker. Optional IF and or Audio DSP board to be added on a later dated as its developed.

A great looking back lighted panel, with adjustable control.

A optional RF Front End with lower noise values.

S-Meter and Transmitter Power Meters, that are big and bright, with optional LED's string.

Optional IF Crystal Filters to be easily added.

A real world RF Gain Control to allow at least -30dB of front end attenuation.

A AGC control adjusting fast or slow AGC, with a real S-Meter calibrated in dB's, that is 6 dB per S-Unit.

Equipment handles on the sides of the front panel.

A Power Supply with a large enough or optional Transformer that can handle some headroom. Or a optional larger transformer. Radio will also run off 12 VDC for a Back Up function if necessary.

More suggestions later as time allows.

Cobra 2000GTL Comeback? I Only Wish

Your idea holds merit Jay just as long as most of what you ask will be end user selectable options to keep a positive price point for us CB'ers, as it is the only three available CB base stations (The Galaxy & the two RCI's) which don't even offer half of what you ask are going for $400 to $500 so maybe DIY could also be an option too, years back I've known serious radio buffs to totally gut "removed from service" Motorola/GE/RCA trunk mount radios & even early generation digital readout scanners & receivers & refit them into various sized enclosures like these.

Aluminum Enclosure Products & Chassis | Browse Our Selection

Instrument Enclosures | Electronic Instrument Enclosures | Metcase USA

Anyway we can always dream can't we? No harm in that.

Hello Spec A: Yeah I am sure I am asking for the Moon here in these options. But the urge fiddle and Modify is out there as you have said. Your modifications sound pretty advanced.

I am also sure that these suggested options would raise the price of the radios to the point where a Ham Radio is affordable. Ok but as Technology marches on maybe these are doable in a inexpensive manner in the further.

A Radio designed with the ability to be modified by the users say using plug in, plug out modules / circuit boards with factory service to assist with modification instructions on a CD or web site would work. Modification of the receiver using DSP for IF Filtering and IF/AF Band Pass would be a big plus. And watch the users come up with many more modifications as time rolls on.

why i like the ideas i didnt buy a base specific radio. i got the uniden 980ssb which is 200$ less than the galaxy base. i just cant justify spending anything over 200 on a base specific radio that only puts out 4 watts.

Wow I would love to see the Cobra 2000GTL,be made again !

I never could afford it when it was made.

Sad thing is,if you find one on EBay is priced into the ceiling level.

Hello All: That would be nice to see a new Cobra 2000 made again.

They would probably make it for 12 and 10 meters as do some manufactures. If it was designed to be modified for the upgrades as said that would be a good feather.

I used a Yaesu FT-902 radio back in the 1980's and it was a totally superior radio over my Motorola Base Radio. Way better receive, less bleed over, tighter receive, it was a joy to operate on all the ham bands.

But as the three leading radio manufactures, Yaesu, Kenwood, and Icom, low end HF Radios are well under 1000 dollars, it doesn't look like its gonna happen.

All a Cobra 2000 was, was a 148 and some extra meters with a power supply in a fancy case. Exact same radio as the Robyn520, President Washington, and a couple of other "base" radios. No better than buying a mobile and power supply. Same thing today with the RCI, and Galaxy radios. Just a 2950 in a fancy case with a power supply. I did something similar years ago when I took a Robyn base module and modified it to fit and power a 2950.
