I have a Jetstream JTB-2 (A Diamond X-200 clone).. It's an 8 foot long dual band collinear for 2m and 440. It's mounted on top of my tower.
It only has three 12 inch radials at the base. I've never tried it without the radials in place, but I imagine removing them wouldn't make a huge difference. And as mmckenna points out, on receive I doubt I'd know they were missing.

does anyone know if when I put my collinear back up after 5 years and three months I took it down about four months ago that the n type plug had folded in on itself and the aerial erector to get the n type back in had to get the pliers on it !
Could it mean that I have lost rf signal !
They out it back up about three weeks ago and it was working mint
But since today has been four signal down on otherwise mint signals
Some colinear antennas don't have radials from the factory. Others have optional radials which only affect the pattern in minor ways.
That said, your issue sounds like it's less to do with the radials and more to do with the connector. What exactly does "folding in on itself" mean? Does that mean the retaining nut came loose and the connector was pushed inside? If that happened, any number of things could have happened inside the antenna - including the connector twisting around and shorting or opening.
Has it been raining recently? Snowing? Icing? Strong winds?
