Civil Air Patrol is an auxilary of the USAF. They mostly deal with aircraft down, search and rescues etc. Combat Air Patrol are the aircraft that fly around a secured area when someone special is there or if a special event is occuring. You DO NOT want to fly within the secure area while the Combat Air Patrol is going on. As for frequencies; try 260.900 (AM mode) for Combat Air Patrol comms with HUNTRESS (NORAD). That frequency is very active during the CAP's that occur over Camp David in Thrumont, MD. With the right antenna, you might, just might, be able to hear them from NYC. As for Combat Air Patrol, try 148.150 (FM), 148.125 (FM), 148.1375 (FM), 149.5375 (FM), 122.900 (AM) and 123.100 (AM). Those are the frequencies they use around here, but they seem to be pretty standard across the nation.

Those are the Civil Air Patrol frequencies. They're going to be going all narrowband before 01/01/08, so new frequencies will be put into place soon.
