Does computers interfere with an antenna or scanner? I have not noticed any difference when moving the scanner far away from the computer I was just curious.

Depending.

Both to some degree.

For most people the antenna is most critical.

I can hear computer noise thru my HF rig on certain bands sometimes. Its very low in the background but noticeable to a sensitive ear. On the flip side, I have to shut down the computer when transmitting on certain bands or it freaks out and locks up. The down side I suppose of having all my stuff crammed on one desk.

I would guess you have problem with your computer, a very bad ground, or an SWR issue (Or you are running a lot of power).

Place your scanner next to your computer monitor. Turn down the squelch just enough to hear static, and then turn off your computer, cable/dsl modem, and wifi box.

If the static on the radio goes away, then you know your PC stuff was causing interference.

My laptop, wifi, modem, even our Vonage phone system causes intereference. I've got all this stuff plugged into one squid. The squid has an off/on button that allows me to turn everything off all at once without manually unplugging and plugging stuff.

Hi Hole and readers,

"Does computers interfere with an antenna or scanner?"

Computing equipment won't interfere with an antenna but interfering with radio receivers is notorious. Now you have the simple answer to your simple question, the rest is confusion.

"I have not noticed any difference when moving the scanner far away from the computer I was just curious."

Obviously you don't have a problem, happy scanning.

I have had some issues with computers interfering on HF reception. The problem in my situation was the PC power supply and the solution (since I only use cheap computers) was to put bypass caps on all the leads comming out of the power supply. Noise gone.

When transmitting, I may sometimes dump my internet connection. On 40 meters it's because I have too much RF floating around in the shack (antenna dependent) and sometimes on 6 meters if the antenna is pointed in certain directions.

I've never had any trouble with PC interference on VHF and up, but I use outside antennas to receive up there.
