What is the difference between cpd's TRU and MSF units?

Aren't all those officers being reassigned back to the beats?

Same mission, different units. They are supposed to "bring in the numbers" , which is code for make arrests. My guess is they're gone for good as the beats are now the backbone, or should have always been the backbone. If you're a regular listener, they're appears to be alot of beat numbers I haven't heard in a long time.

The GEU (Gang Enforcement Unit), has taken over the "bring in the numbers" game. These are the 6700 units you'll hear on the Zones and city-wides. Narcotics, guns, gangs are their priorities. They do alot of the search warrants with the sole purpose of getting guns from the gangs. Narcotics Unit (6200 series) have been doing a little more activity as of late, probable to justify their unit. Another 150 more will be hitting the street this weekend. The District Commanders have leverage as how to deploy the extra officers. Midnight tact teams, extra tact team have been some of the ways i've heard. It's been quite interesting to say the least...

CPD Scorecard

Since Superintendent Garry McCarthy has taken over, i've heard alot of changes. "Quality of Life" arrests have increased. So how would I/You know? UCR Code 1661 is Vice Case Report...Games/Dice. This was one of the offenses that were mentioned in a recent press conference that CPD would be actively pursuing as it leads to "gang activity"...shootings, robberies etc. Hearing many "Gang Dispersals" event numbers being requested by Tact and Gang Enforcement Units lately. As I mentioned before, alot of "new" beat numbers have recently been heard. I haven't heard these numbers in many years. The "flash-mob" incidents in the downtown area (Zone 4), have been bringing some new officers out on the radios, and they're using 4500 unit beat designators, followed by letters.

City-Wide 1 is more tolerable to listen to, since the MSF & TRU units have been disbanded. I'm sure the disptcher(s) working here should be happy with that effort. The primary user on city-wide 1 is the Public Transportation Section (7300 Series) units. They're broken down a little bit too (7320 Series-Explosive Canine Unit)...(7380 Series-CTA Special Employment...overtime offices)...(7390 Series-Public Transportation Tact/Covert Teams). Marine Unit (M-1-M-20), Traffic Enforcement Units (3200 Series), Canine Units (4610, 4620, 4630 series)..S.O.R.T.or Special Operation Response Teams (4603-4609)...SWAT (4650-4699) are the primary users. Their could be others as everyone has this city-wide, but this is who you'll probably hear the most. If their is a Public Transportation event, the Zone Dispatcher is supposed to simulcast it on city-wide 1 (if available, to simulcast), or send the event to the city-wide 1 dispatcher for immediate dispatch. In-progress, disturbances, people under trains etc.

City-Wide 2 is for Forensic Service (5810-5880) requests, Detectives (5100-5500 Series), Crime Lab(5801-5805) etc. It may not be the most exciting radio traffic, but if you're like me and like to be "in the know", you could catch some interesting radio traffic on here. If you hear a Detective Unit request a "Line-up photo" from Forensic Services, it's a"positive" identification by a witness/complainant at an Area Detective Headquarters. This might not be an exciting event to listen to, but it's an example of what I tell people that listen of "how to listen".

City-Wide 3 is for repair service requests (R-1-R-6). Formal messages on Vehicle Thefts and Missing Persons can be heard too.

City-Wide 4 is the alternate for City-Wide 2, and the dispatcher can be heard on both.

City-Wide 5 & 6 are alternate city-wides. Used for special events and if a Zone's radio system fails. Keep these two somewhere as you never know when it will be used.

City-Wide 7 is the TMA's (Traffic Management Authority). If you're heading downtown, put an ear on this for a few minutes to see if their's any traffic issues. I usually have this locked out, but was heading downtown one day, unlocked it for 5 minutes, and avoided some traffic congestion.

Some of this isn't "new" information, just an update. I know their are posts from vacationers, and they like to listen to CPD radio traffic and ask "what can I listen to" while i'm there? Others who don't listen as regularly, get confused or frustrated by all the "constant chatter", which I understand from a "newbie" or "out of towners" perspective. Hope this helps someone out...

Tru

I've been hearing some TRU (Targetred Response Unit) units on City-wide 1 the past couple of nights. 4210-Series have been the beat numbers heard. The unit is not completely disbanded then, just reduced. This Friday, admininistrative staff members will be returning to the streets, and the rest of the districts will benefit with additional personnel.

To Bob...your welcome for the "newbie-training". If you have a free analog scanner around, pick your favorite Zone and put it in the Hold mode. Should be an interesting summer.

They're Gone !!!

Chicago police to disband 2 special units - chicagotribune.com

Being disbanded and all officers have bidding oppurtunities to other districts. If you're keeping a CPD scorecard, 4200 and 4400 Series units are no more. The exception is you might here a 44G(George) or 42(George) unit on the city-wides or Zones. These are Area Assigned Gun Teams that have yet to be totally disbanded, so not to cause confusion.
