The Grand Celebration is currently in Boston on a Hotel Contract, hosting construction crews from across North America doing emergency restoration work in the communities north of Boston from the Gas Disaster of early September.

Carnival Horizon Freqs?

Taking a cruise on the Carnival Horizon in March 2019, wondering if anyone has any confirmed frequency information for this ship.

I was on the Carnival Vista in March 2018 and posted the freqs I found in this forum at that time. Activity was primarily DMR. Since the Horizon is the sister ship to the Vista, I expect to find heavy use of DMR on the Horizon as well.

Thanks in advance!

nothing reported as yet for the Horizon, but a good bet they are DMR/TRBO

No Capacity Plus reported for Carnival - so all conventional.

I just booked a May 11th cruise on the Carnival Magic out of Ft Lauderdale to St Maartin, St Kitts, San Juan and the Grand Turks. Any frequency info would be greatly appreciated. I will be taking my Yaesu FT2-DR (with extended receive) and a handheld directional yagi on the cruise, therefore I can monitor just about everything vhf/uhf/am/etc and transmit on dual ham bands as needed. Thanks for any info!

PS: Is DMR now pretty much the norm on cruise ships now? If so, maybe I will take a radio capable of monitoring DMR systems as well.

During the summer time a lot of big cruise ships arrive at Stockholm and almost all use DMR. Most of them seems to follow that TG concept above where TG20 are Bridge and TG30 Technical Engineer and so on and a few have just programmed TG1-2-3-4 not thinking about logic that bridge could use several easy to remember TGs like 21-22 for different internal uses and perhaps 29 for excersice operations and the same concept for the other depertments.

Last reported info for the Carnival Magic was 2012 and Analog

However, as more ships and lines more to DMR, they are still using the same 457/467 pairs

I did have one report of Carnival running NexEdge in 2012, but I think it was more likely DMR [aka TRBO]

As I had in the past, I was planning on bringing a scanner on my upcoming Carnival cruise. I received an email from Carnival that included a list of prohibited items. Included on that list was the following line:

"Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB), communication scanners, wideband receivers (emphasis mine), satellite phones, transformers, lasers and laser pointers." As a side note, there is an exemption for "ham radios/amateur radio equipment", but it would be my luck that someone would know the difference and I'd lose the scanner.

It was stated at the top of the page that prohibited items will be removed and disposed of and no compensation will be provided. Not wanting to risk the loss of my BCD436HP, I guess that I won't be taking it with me.

FWIW, the complete list of prohibited items can be found at Carnival Cruise Line Prohibited Items, Exemptions and Other Considerations | Carnival Cruise Line .

I never leave home without the ham ticket in my wallet, Bill, but in this case it isn't guaranteed to get me past the fact that the 436 is a scanner and not a ham radio.

I guess it'll leave more time for boat drinks, taking in the views and trying to win a genuine 24k gold plastic ship on a stick! ;-)

Just got off a Carnival cruise. I took my 436 and Kenwood D74, my dad also had a marine VHF with him. Nobody ever said anything about me using them, although technically the D74 is allowed. I've taken the 436 on over a dozen cruises without issues, I guess I've been lucky so far. They were in a carry on bag with the antennas off when they went through security.

I just got off the phone with Carnival and she said FRS radios are okay and so are ham radios and scanners (if you are licensed, addresses have to match your cruise documents) if you get other information ask for supervisor for the latest revisions.
