A two-story house at 4432 Horizon Point Drive, near Marksheffel and Bradley roads, burned early this morning.

The fire was reported around 3 a.m. by a 911 caller, possibly a newspaper carrier, said Lt. Jeff Sievers, with the Colorado Springs Fire Department. Smoke alarms inside the house woke up the woman inside and she was able to get out along with the family dog.

The rest of the family was out-of-state.

Four other homes were evacuated, but did not catch fire. Sievers said when crews arrived there was fire in most windows and in the roof; the decision was made not to enter the home, but to fight it defensively.

The American Red Cross is working with the family.

The cause of the fire is unknown; officials are investigating.

"We just want to make sure we cover all our bases," Sievers said.
