Has the CSP radio system changed somehow in the past year? I haven’t listened in a while but all of a sudden CSP has disappeared (completely).

My discone and HP-1 received the CSP very well. Only change I know of is a couple of the small elements broke off.

thanks for any info.

It changed entirely from the old 800 MHz Motorola Type II system to a 700/800 MHz P25 Phase II system, which your HP-1 is not capable of decoding. Have you looked in the RR database lately? The CSP system has been defunct for over a year now, replaced with the CLMRN.

Thanks very much for your response. I was afraid it was something like that. Guess it’s time for an HP-2. Any other suggestions?

I recommend a 325P2 handheld or a 996P2 base.

I have both and they work great on CSERN.

I also have a SDS200 but that's not necessary.

Good luck!

I recommend Scannermaster.

They have a generous return policy if you need it and they're close to CT.

I never have.

Good luck!

Nearly all of the CLMRN "sites" are actually simulcast cells, which are made up of multiple physical sites transmitting on the same frequencies simultaneously. This includes the Troop I simulcast, and Chesire is right in between 2-3 of those sites. Most older scanners have trouble decoding simulcasts due to their hardware design.

While I'm not in the business of recommending scanners, as everyone's situation is a little bit different, I will point out that the Uniden SDS series are the only two models that were explicitly designed to properly handle these sort of P25 trunked simulcast cells. Yes, they are more expensive than all other scanner models. In the end, you must decide if that extra cost offsets the aggravation you may experience if you purchase other models that are not optimized for P25 simulcast, such as the two that our friend above loves to blindly recommend for everyone, regardless of their situation.

I second what the doc said, I have had an SDS, and the 325, G4 and G5... the 325 doesnt miss anything. I would even go as far as to say its just as good if not better than my sds100... which is why I sold that

I've read here that a lot of folks have had issues w/ the HP2 when listening to CSERN... I have no direct experience. I will say that my 325p2 is humming along on my office desk. I am in Southington parked on Troop L Simulcast right now and hearing quite a bit. I am using a 700mhz Shure antenna.

I have owned an SDS100 and played around endlessly with the filters, antennas etc.. and I am being 100% honest here... I find that the 325p2 hears just as much if not more. I own both a G4 and G5 and I absolutely love those too, and while they're superior to the 325p2 in many ways, as far as reception is concerned they're quite evenly matched in normal circumstances. The 325p2 does not work well in my basement... where my G pagers work as if they were outside on a cloudless day.. but still don't discount the 325.

When I go to take the kids to the lights in Meriden I'll bring my 325 and give you a report.

Just curious about something here. I miss the days of being able to travel up and down 95 in CT and have hardly any interruption in picking up the old trunk system. With the new system there's a ton of dead spots scanner wise. This is with a hand held, no external antenna. Anyone else notice this?

I travel up and down 177, so quite a bit less "dense" of an area and I get traffic most of the way.

Thanks for you comments. I’d say the HP-2 is out.

I have both the 996P2 and Unication G5 monitoring the CLMRN system, both work great. I live right at the corner of where Troop E meets Troop F and both E&F meet Troop K, I don't feel I miss a thing with either.

Same here! Maybe I lucked out... On the fringes of Simulcast L where it meets Simulcast H even the G pagers struggle here at my office, as did my old SDS100. Aside from that I am very pleased with the 325p2.
