What exactly would be the benefit of using this mode when programming a freq.? Also, why isn't MO mode available when programming before the freq. is entered?
If I had a freq. of 406.500 Motorola Type II SmartNet would I program the mode as MO or CT and what's the difference?

Anyone with answers and explainations? Thx

It has nothing to do with benefit; if it's a Motorola trunked system, you must program it using "MO" as the mode. If it isn't a trunked system, in other words, a conventional frequency, then programming it with "CT" as the mode would show any PL (CTCSS) tone that might be in use on the frequency. Trunked systems don't use CTCSS tones. If you have no desire to see or use tones, then program it as "FM" for the mode.

CT and/or DC is used for conventional frequencies only. Since different agencies may have the same frequencies in the same general area these sub-audible tones will separate who receives what. This cuts down on interference and cross talk.

It means when you have the mode set for CTCSS and the PL/DPL set to search your PRO 163 will display the CT code when you receive radio traffic on that channel if the system that you are receiving is set up with the tones. This applies to conventional systems only as trunking system use talkgroup IDs. You have to program the text tags for each TG in order to know at a glance what you are hearing. For example my local Sheriff's main dispatch channel is TG 4016 or HCSO Patrol 1 which is the text tag I have in my PRO163.
