can anyone in here tell me if there is a difference between the DCS and the DPL codes for these scanners ? i have the 396 t and the 996 t and in the 396 t i only have the options in the scanner to set a channel at either the DCS mode or the CTCSS mode i dont see anything for a DPL mode in there i know the names of these 2 codes is digital coded squelch and the other one is digital private line but are they the same code and just being used by 2 different names ? i was just trying to program a couple conventional channels and kinda confused here with this im thinking they are the same but not sure ?

Not sure where I got this description below but here it is:

Some tone nomenclature by manufacture:

GE - Channel Guard (CG)
Motorola - Private Line (PL)
RCA - Quiet Channel
E. F. Johnson - Call Guard
Kenwood Commercial - QT & DQT for Quiet Talk and Digital Quiet Talk
Kenwood Amateur - CTCSS and DCS

For the trademarked names, I think they all add a 'D' (for Digital)
in front of the CTCSS names (I.E. DPL, DCG, DQC)

CTCSS - Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System
CDCSS - Continuous Digital Coded Squelch System
DCS - Digital Coded Squelch

In addition - see the RR wiki below for more specific info

Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System - The RadioReference Wiki

DCS - The RadioReference Wiki

I also have come across people that confuse Digital Coded Squelch with digital modulation! The Digital Coded Squelch can be decoded by an analogue scanner!
