If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I need to put a CB in my new car but have no room for a radio or control head. Does anyone have any experience with any of the following radios:

Cobra 75WX
Uniden CMX560/760
Anytone Apollo 1
Or?

I am well aware of the legalities of running a convert / modified / export radio so please spare me your concerns on that.

Good question. I'm wondering the same thing. I would like to have CB capabilities along with my Ham gear in my mobile system. Not sure I could live with just AM. If there is a SSB version of these I would do it for sure.

I've done a fair amount of looking for a super compact ssb rig and can't seem to find any. I would buy one right now if someone made one.

I guess SSB just doesn't have much of a market right now. There seems to be very few legal SSB radios in production. Maybe when the solar cycle gets back on it's upswing there will be more of a demand for it. Especially now that long distance communication (within the US and it's territories) is now legal.

Check out the Albrecht models in Europe. You can get a decent radio AM/FM/SSB with same 40 channel centers as US. They had one with a detachable/remote control head. I know they are not type accepted here, etc, but the otherwise meet power rules.

Cobra still makes one with most of the workings in the mic. Here's a link to the Cobra site for the unit but you can probably do better on the price by shopping around. I've used one in the past and it was not the worst but not the best. Maybe adequate?

I like how they describe a radio as "full featured" which doesn't include SSB. The same with the Beartracker 885.

I was going to post that one as well, but in reading some of the reviews there were a couple users reporting overheating after extended use.

I am kicking myself for selling my nice Realistic TRC-465 (AM/SSB CB Radio) . Nothing as nice made since and whatever I could buy used will be "Tweaked and Peaked" by Tim the Truck-stop "Tek" with the Golden Screwdriver. I just want a radio, no rodger beeps, no NOAA weather receiver.

Even though its not a built into the mic or dectachable control head. I would check out the President Bill AM only. It is super small. No SSB, I wanted SSB but I have very little room for mounting radios in my car, I sure miss the early 90s cars that I used to have. The president bill is mounted in my car.

I will go ahead and say that in the event of another big disaster hurricane down here like the Mexico Beach storm, having a AM only radio would likely still be quite useful. This is due to the fact that most CB mobile operators (and base stations for that mater) will be AM only.

Starting to lean towards the Anytone Apollo I / Stryker SR-89 unless I can squeeze something like the uber tiny (4" X 4" X 1") Anytone Smart Radio in my vehicle...

Anyone have actual experience with any of those radios?

So i have upgraded most of my CB radio to the Uniden Uniden CMX760. Its a good little unit, but really needs a external speaker to hear it well. I like the scan feature on it for traveling. I put one in my work and personal vehicles and in our JK. I run the Larsen NMO27 on all of them and so far nothing but good. I still have my old Cobra 29 in the motor home. I had the Cobra 75 and hated it.

Also if you need a longer cable for the head I used a Shielded CAT6E with a straight thru coupler. Works perfect.

Ok, I tried to order a AM only unit. I talked myself out of the need for SSB. Was sitting there on eBay with my cursor over the "place item in cart" button.

I couldn't do it, just couldn't.

I'll second this.
It's rare that I need a CB, but was doing a long road trip and decided to add one to my truck a few years ago. I bought the Uniden CMX560 and was pretty happy with it.
As KB2ZTX said, it -really- needs the external speaker unless you have a very quiet car and keep all your windows rolled up. I used an existing Motorola speaker I already had installed in my truck, and it worked well.
I also did the CAT 5 cable extension. That let me put the radio behind the rear seat with the VHF deck, utilized the #6 power feed I had to the battery, and use the existing coaxial cable I had to the roof.

Worked out well.

Only thing I found, and this really isn't a big deal, is that the radio out of the box only did 2.5 watts. Not an issue for me as most of what I did was listen and we all know that a good antenna makes a bigger difference than additional power does.

Scan function was nice. It's limited in the squelch settings, but that wasn't an issue. Display is nice. After a few days of using it, I learned where the buttons were and could change settings without looking.

I don't currently have it mounted in my truck, but I may consider putting it back in.

Back to the CB crap, does that CMX760 have decent TX audio, or can it be made to have good audio? I'll probably use it twice a year while traveling. While I'll only TX on it very rarely if ever, I'd like it to sound good if I do...

I really only use mine to listen. Think i used it once when on a trip to tell a driver he had no trailer lights. He answered so i know he heard me.
