Scanner : Tapped BC780

Decoder : Universal M-400

Question : Can I run the M-400 into a sound card ?

(Have a 2 level data slicer if I need it)

I would guess it would help if we knew what you were decoding. I have two tapped scanners now, an old BC-700A and a Pro-97, and I use the taps for Unitrunker, so... I'd guess the question you're asking needs more clarification or input (no pun intended).

Any kind of decoding I can do with the M-400 I would like to be able to with software - actually I guess I really don't need the M-400 ,trying to see if there was a way to "keep it in line" and use both I guess !!!

Well my two tapped scanners are fed into Line In (I can't stand using Mic inputs, that's just me) and Unitrunker is reading off both. I do some other monitoring on occasion of some other digitally encoded signals (aka non-analog non-voice traffic), and it works great for me.

So, if you mean can you take the discriminator output on the 780 and feed it into the soundcard so you can run some decoding software on it and see what happens, the answer is most definitely YES - the question then becomes:

What software will you use and what will you decode/monitor? :)

The M400 does not have any output other than a printer port, as far as I can find. It's a stand alone unit, no connection on to a computer.

You feed audio into a sound card. Does the M-400 generate audio? Somehow, I doubt it.

It works with the the M-400 setup to the tap of the 780 - Acars,CTSS,DCS,Pocsag,Supogs,Golay - all have worked - haven't tried anything else.

Consider yourself lucky to have that model, as of the Version 3 M-400, all the paging modes were removed. No more GOLAY or Pocsag, etc.

So this would be a good trade item eh ? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

also Where does the firmware come into play - this one has 2.01 but I see the Universal on http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/decoders/m400.html has 3.0 ! Any place you guys know of to get the firmware updates.

Actually it does have a speaker out, sadly its filtered audio, but you can set it to pass only selected CTSS audio. As SkipSanders said you have the good version, all updating the firmware will accomplish is losing the pager modes.
If you need a manual I can probably scan mine and send you a copy.

Merry Christmas everyone.
