Arson
DENVER - Authorities say a raging fire at a shopping center that destroyed numerous businesses on Sunday was the work of an arsonist.
Denver Fire says the blaze, which began at about 4 a.m., destroyed all but one of the businesses at Holly Square Shopping Center near 34th and Holly Street.
Denver Fire Lt. Phil Champagne says evidence has been discovered that confirms the elements of an arson fire. No other details were released.
Champagne says Denver Fire worked with Denver Police, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) on the investigation.
Denver Police originally responded to the scene after a security alarm in one of the businesses was triggered. When they arrived on scene, they saw the smoke and flames and alerted Denver Fire.
The fire spread quickly because the nine businesses in the complex had a shared roof and flames grew to at least 30 feet high at one point.
Sixty firefighters responded to the scene, but had to pull out at various times because of fears the building might collapse.
Denver firefighters say they had a hard time getting control of the fire, but contained it by 7 a.m.
One firefighter was injured when a hose struck him in the face. He was treated at the scene and is OK, according to authorities.
Fire crews say a dollar store, a liquor store and a dentist office were all among the businesses that were destroyed. They say the only business that was spared in the Holly Square Shopping Center was a day care center at the end of the complex, which firefighters say was saved because of a firewall. They say it was the only business in the complex with a firewall.
Authorities say the Family Dollar store sustained the most damage and two people were arrested at about 8:30 a.m. on Sunday for allegedly trying to loot wet toilet paper from the back of the store. Their names were not immediately released.
