Sometimes I listen to the Los Angeles MTA bus and rail lines (Red, Blue, Gold, Green) but haven't tuned in for a couple of weeks. Yesterday and today I'm not picking up any communications. I have the frequencies programed in two scanners from the RR database.

Anyone know if they changed systems? The only thing I pick up from all of the frequencies in the database is Facilities Security, nothing else can be heard.

Metro rail communications have switched to NXDN digital modulation, not monitorable by scanners. This has occurred over the last 2 years, if not longer. You can monitor the signals from computer programs like Digital Speech Decoder, but not with the scanner itself. Gold switched over at least 2 years ago, and the others slowly switched over sometime last year.

FYI, there are 2 or 3 other threads in the Greater LA section that covered this upgrade.

Thanks, didn't know this. I was on the Red Line about 3 weeks ago and was able to pick up the underground subway. I guess it hadn't completely switched over yet.

Well at least I can still pick up the Sheriff and Fire Dept's just in case there's trouble.

From what I know they switched over completely, both under and above. Here is a photo from the red line cab.
