I am looking for a Kenwood Radio that will work on both the NXDN NEXEDGE 4800
and the NXDN NEXEDGE 9600 systems. Can anyone tell me what the differences are between them?
Some of the very low end commercial/business radios that Kenwood sold would only do 4800NXDN.
For the record, in Kenwood language, this is what they are called:
6.25KHz/4800baud NXDN is called "Very Narrow NXDN" in the programming software.
12.5KHz/9600baud NXDN is called "Narrow NXDN" in the programming software.
As long as you don't go with the low end radio, they'll all do both out of the box.
As for how they are different, the list above covers the technical details. In real life:
Very Narrow NXDN tends to have a bit better coverage. It uses 6.25KHz wide channels, so it's easy to stick it in between other users.
Narrow NXDN tends to not have quite as good coverage, but it benefits from having a wider channel/higher data rate, so if you are using the radios to transmit data, video, GPS location, etc. it can be a better choice.
What kind of radio are you looking for?
Base? Mobile? Portable? VHF? UHF? 800MHz? 900MHz?
What's your budget?
New? Used?
Most of all, what's your experience level programming radios?
