discone antenna

Hi,
I would like to built my own discone antenna. But first, I would like to know exactely how this type of antenna works ( what is the role of the disk, the cone...), and what kind of equation I should use to dimension the antenna.
If anybody has information, or can advice me a good book that deals with discone antenna, in details, please let me know. I would be very happy.

I built one once using wire and copper screen. Used almost a whole roll of solder and 3 or 4 tips for the gun. It actually worked too. The hardest part is weatherproofing the connection. I put it inside a piece of pvc pipe.
