So, does anyone know what Disney World is going to do for radio service when Sprint shuts down the Nextel system later this year?

I read somewhere that if you were using and or already a Nextel costumer that your service would continue till at least 2015. By then Nextel figures that your equipment / phones will need replaced or broken anyways. By then the customer would have or will replace their phone(s) with one that is using the new push to talk technology for the Sprint network. I am a Nextel customer myself and as of today Sprint / Nextel hasn't told me that I have to change or buy a new phone yet.

Nope, it's Sprint's network.

I would imagine it will all get converted to Sprint CDMA direct connect, when IDEN is shutdown next year.

We have an electric company in Baltimore.. BG&E that has its own Iden wide area system.. It is NOT Sprint or Nextel's infrastructure.. Are you sure Disney is actually on Sprint/ Nextel's system?

Disney's iden system is a standalone system. Users can only access their system and do not roam to any other Nextel iden/Sprint CDMA network. Vice versa, your boost or nextel cannot access Disney's tower.

If I had to give my educated guess, they will go the Mototrbo route based upon what I've seen already in use.

From what read the last time this was brought up, Disney's system is not a standalone system.

Correct; for the past several years WDW has been jettisoning "non-core businesses and activities." If you dine at World Showcase in EPCOT, you're eating at a restaurant operated by a contractor (hence green instead of blue ID badges worn by employees). The only two "non-entertainment" business units left at WDW are Reedy Creek Energy Services and Walt Disney World Telecom. WDW Telecom writes a big fat check to Sprint every month - WDW has ZERO interest in owning or operating a radio system. It's not their core competency. Heck, even IT is now outsourced to IBM (server management and network) and ACS (helpdesk and tech support).

MotoTrbo is the most likely replacement, but remember that all of these contractors running around 'the World' are responsible for their own gear so each can make their own decisions to some degree or another depending upon the phase of moon, mood of management, and last quarter's financial performance.

The Disneyland Resort (in CA) does the same thing by extending the Nextel iDEN network in to the park. They've still kept their old 900 trunked system on the air though.

TDR only [somewhat] recently switched over to Nextel so I'd figure there's a plan in place to convert over to PTT over CDMA.

In reference to the cans and string... That made my day! Flippin hilarious and to the point! Love it! In the midst of all this new technology one has to revert back to more simple times when that new technology then becomes old and outdated. The good ole tried and true!!! Hahahaha!!!
