DMR on Cummins Engine Company Is the only DMR "system" that is not being decoded with the TRX-1 that I have found. They are in Jackson Co. Indiana and Bartholomew county. Worldwide competitor with Caterpillar. Large truck Diesel engine maker. Shows color codes.....slot numbers. Programmed as DMR so shows that. But the voice is garbled. Inverted? Not DMR? Clearly a voice but garbled up Anyone know anything about their system and how best to monitor?

There is no such thing as inverted DMR.

The traffic might be encrypted.

I'd say this is probably the case also.

There is one simple DMR system/frequency in my area that, when I first heard it, I thought the person talking was whispering and then thought maybe they had some kind of throat issue. Eventually, I determined that it was probably some type of scrambling which could be "basic privacy". The strangest part is, for what I know of the user(s), encryption seems like overkill and unnecessary. They had the option so I guess they exercised it.

Still other systems have exhibited obvious "normal sounding" encryption (just garbled noise).

What's "basic privacy"? A setting for the DMR radio user to make the call encrypted or is that a TRX-1 option for DMR reception (that I haven't seen). ?

All my DMR radios have what is deemed basic privacy. I'm not that into encryption, I'm sure someone more versed could give better details. It's simple scrambling of the voice. We use it at work, on the scanner it just sounds like garbled whispering. My 436 does not show "ENC" when our work radios are active. I checked this afternoon.

Then there is enhanced security that is way more secure.

No. DMR isn't super-secure. It offers the "basic privacy" and another higher level of encryption as configured by the Customer Programming Software (CPS).

But that higher level of encryption isn't considered ultra-secure either. A determined hacker could conceivable break either given enough time, but at least here in the U.S. that runs afoul of the Communications Privacy Act.

Don't some DMR radios offer AES encryption? I know my Vertex offer basic privacy, enhanced privacy, and enhanced encryption. I've never played around with these features on my vertex.
