I have a UV-5R and seeing the somewhat high prices of DMR radios, I was wondering if an aux adapter and a computer would let me run DMR through my Baofeng and software on the computer. Is this possible?
Welcome to the RR forums. The UV-5R doesn't have a discriminator tap & I'm not aware of a mod. I've tried running unfiltered audio through the headphone outputs of various radios & into DSDPlus with no success. If a DMR radio is out of your price range I'd recommend an RTL-SDR or two paired with DSDPlus Fastlane. Or if within your budget the SDRPlay line is far superior to the RTL-SDRs & offers 10MHz of useable spectrum bandwidth

I don't know how you'd reliably extract DMR signals for a UV5R. If you're looking to receive only, USB SDR dongle would be the least expensive way to go that I can think of. If you wish to transmit, I think the least expensive option might be a TYT UV380 the mor popular VHF and UHF bands.
Looking for my first DMR radio - Anyone have both the TYT MD-UV380 and MD-UV390 ? I can't decide which to get :) UV390 is waterproof, but the battery latch mechanism looks weird and fragile to me. It also has a plastic PTT button one reviewer didn't like as much as the rubber one on the UV380...
You can buy a TYT MD-UV380 for around $100 and the firmware is being actively developed by a 3rd party. This gives it more features than the stock firmware.

As others have pointed out to decode DMR you need a discriminator tap.
If you are just looking for a cheaper way, then the experimentation I about to explain is not for you. You'll spend more to experiment than you would to just buy a proper DMR radio.
To transmit DMR you need a radio capable of TDMA (very quick short TX/RX turn-arounds) There are stupid ways to transmit a DMR signal that uses both time slots using an analog radio. Basically the 2nd slot contains null data since the hardware cannot turn around fast enough. Good for simplex experiments but thats about it.
Op25 has code to sort of do what you are asking about. Droidstar as well.

Baofeng makes several DMR radios that range from about $70 - $90. If you can find a RD-5R (sold out on Baofeng's site) or the newer DM-1701 dual band DMR.
TYT maybe cheaper DMR radios, but they work very well, plus got great battery life.
As always DMR programming is kind of confusing with having to input talkgroups before in the software prior to programming the channels. Also for each channel needs to enter a color code and slot.
Going forward you can find premade files online of radio programming that you can study and modify for your use.
