In the recent past, I learned from those responsible for installing/programming trunking systems in the central Texas area that Texas DPS can monitor CB transmissions; however, they are disallowed from using it to talk.
In Eastland, Texas, I had an interesting conversation with DPS. I heard DPS transmissions in the background. So, I engaged this trooper after two drivers nearly ran me off the road when I was attempting to enter IH20.
The DPS trooper started with their attitude thinking I was a trucker. He indicated that they were only interested in dealing with 18-wheelers. I can say without a shadow of a doubt my comments were very sarcastic and confrontational.
In one central Texas city, the city where I learned about DPS having CB radios, they indicated that the local PD had them as well. I verified this one day when I was traveling on the loop.
I was driving around the loop in the city in question and noticed a unit set up for laser and/or radar. I announced their whereabouts on the CB. Immediately after making this transmission, I heard, "we got you 59." I was going exactly 59 mph. There were several other engagements with this police agency. Although restricted to do so, the officer did not follow protocol. I did poke fun at the cheap-looking CB antenna on top.
