• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

APX Does anyone know how to turn on the end tone that firefighters use?

Totally unnecessary unless the system requires unit identification. We hated it on pre. Asked that it be moved to post but was too expensive according to our contract provider to program each radio. I don’t know why anyone would want it unnecessarily. It’s VERY annoying.

Please forgive me for not expressing myself clearly. What I said was the tone that appeared after the first minute in the video.

That's not MDC, it's TPS. It's two TPS bursts in a row. Apparently the second one comes from the vehicle repeater.

He is correct it's TPS, Digital signaling on an analog channel.
You would have to set up a personality for it, you do lose some functions when using that.
The help files in APX tells you how to do it

Still annoying, unless you’re NYFD. And even then, I’m sure they get tired of hearing it. Squak, squak.
Reminds me of the seagulls in “Finding Nemo”.

MDC and TPS aren't annoying to users with a proper commercial radio that knows how to mute it. Users should never hear it.

It's only people listening with scanners or ham radios that have this issue. In fact, if the channel has PL squelch and it's set up to drop PL, you don't hear it either. (Cue complaint about ham radios not knowing about PL turn-off bursts)

I’m speaking strictly from a public safety users aspect. When you’re on scene with a dozen or more people using the radio. The MDC bursts become annoying. And THAT is a programming issue at the agency level.

There was a ham I heard who had quite the setup, a whackers delight, he had a couple radios - MDC, DTMF, MODAT, GESTAR, TPS, rotated between transmissions. You didn't know what your were going to hear next!

Yeah – we turn it off on direct channels whenever possible. Even if the user has a display radio, and it's in their hand and not on their belt, they're usually busy looking somewhere more important when on-scene.
