It's made up of two tones that only firefighters seem to use. Like this:
He is correct it's TPS, Digital signaling on an analog channel. That's not MDC, it's TPS. It's two TPS bursts in a row. Apparently the second one comes from the vehicle repeater.
There was a ham I heard who had quite the setup, a whackers delight, he had a couple radios - MDC, DTMF, MODAT, GESTAR, TPS, rotated between transmissions. You didn't know what your were going to hear next!CopSounds (tm) and now FireSounds (tm)! Whackers on both disciplines can now make noises!
Still annoying, unless you’re NYFD. And even then, I’m sure they get tired of hearing it. Squak, squak. That's not MDC, it's TPS. It's two TPS bursts in a row. Apparently the second one comes from the vehicle repeater.
MDC and TPS aren't annoying to users with a proper commercial radio that knows how to mute it. Users should never hear it.Still annoying, unless you’re NYFD. And even then, I’m sure they get tired of hearing it. Squak, squak.
I’m speaking strictly from a public safety users aspect. When you’re on scene with a dozen or more people using the radio. The MDC bursts become annoying. And THAT is a programming issue at the agency level.MDC and TPS aren't annoying to users with a proper commercial radio that knows how to mute it. Users should never hear it.
It's only people listening with scanners or ham radios that have this issue. In fact, if the channel has PL squelch and it's set up to drop PL, you don't hear it either. (Cue complaint about ham radios not knowing about PL turn-off bursts)

Yeah – we turn it off on direct channels whenever possible. Even if the user has a display radio, and it's in their hand and not on their belt, they're usually busy looking somewhere more important when on-scene.I’m speaking strictly from a public safety users aspect. Every Bowelturd low audio road apple has them- the turdy audio is at like 1.2KHz deviation with a rolloff at around 1500KHz, but the stupid CB radio roger beep is what comes blasting through around 4KHz.Roger beeps,,,who needs them.
Who is Roger and why is he always out?Roger beeps,,,who needs them.
I was on a job in the UK and one of our crew using a radio would always say "roger that!" at the end of most transmissions. Our UK counterparts would snicker because that means "F that!" in their area.Who is Roger and why is he always out?![]()
