I remember there was somebody doing the same (keying up, dogs barking) on the 145.190 Mt. Mitchell repeater (Yancey county NC). It was a number of times a week and kept happening for about a year and a half. That repeater is about 140 miles away from Davidson county, but the offender on the repeater may have moved since they have not been heard in a very long time, probably 8 months or longer. I don't think they ever found out who it was.

Whoever it was could have been almost anywhere because the repeater sits so high. I am 85 miles away and can make it on a 5 watt handheld. I'm thinking that maybe the interference is coming from more towards Davidson County than Yancey - which is why it was so difficult to track the problem down. Just a theory I'm putting out there.

Davidson County 911 director Rob Wilson said:
...When we do make that change, that will help some of this, but until we make that full switch over, you’re still going to have both systems basically patched together for a period of time until everyone can make that switch...

He's making it sound as if when the switch is made they will completely move away from VHF.
I'm inclined to think that what he really means is that the county will follow suit with all the others and mute the inbound side of VHF and only use it for transmitting open VHF pagers.

Davidson County Fire is already on the Viper system with the VHF patched. From what I can tell, most of what's transmitted and received on the Viper TG is simulcast on the VHF side - at least when it originates from CCom. BUT - the barking dog is not making it into the Viper side. Ironically - the barking dog was active again last night.
It does make it to the viper side. Both the viper fire dispatch and the vhf fire dispatch are patched at the 911 center. The old patch was taken down a while back and it was done at the console which has taken the 3 second delay out of it which is super nice because the audio quality is so much better on the viper side. I have heard it on my APX6000xe and the XTL5000 (7/800mhz) loud and clear. I'm not sure if someone is doing it on purpose or if they have a radio bought off of eBay thats got a setting where it will key up with the sound of a voice, thus when the dog starts barking it keys and unkeys the radio. Something like this that has voice operated transmission Baofeng UV-9R Plus 15W Dual Band Handheld Two Way Radio Walkie Talkie VHF UHF 6941701092359 | eBay . Anyways its super aggravating.

It is my understanding that for 6-9 months the vhf will stay as it currently is but they will eventually mute the inbound side essentially fixing this issue. They have to keep the VHF system for paging . Hopefully the switch will go smooth and it can be muted sooner if they cant figure out who's radio is doing it.

With the amount of baofengs in use by davidson I wouldn't be surprised if it's a firefighter that accidentally turned on VOX. Not sure about the north side of the county but down south it seems like everyone has at least one of them.

Good Info. I haven't noticed it coming through on the VIPER TG in my SDS100 but it probably was just holding the analog side quicker.

I’ve also seen modified 2-meter handhelds in use.

Here is a video I made this evening. This is my G5 that we just got and it is in the 7/800 trunked mode in that zone. This was broadcast over DVSN Fire Dispatch. Also the go live date is set for Nov 14th pending we don't have crappy weather in the couple days before that. There is some work thats got to be done at the Lexington site.

For grins and giggles, has anyone tried to listen to the VHF Repeater's INput frequency and see what they might hear?
Looking at the locations of some of the ones that have posted to this thread, it may yield some kinda result.

(My .02 cents, sans interest and fees)

The county sent out a press release this morning. No info on the who, what, where. Working to track that info down. I'll post when we know.

Basically the FCC Field Office from Atlanta came here and used special equipment to help find the source of the interference.
