Hello everyone. New scanner here using a bcd396xt and the butel arc pro software. Just seeing if there is a way to download the entire RR database into my laptop? I am on the road a lot and often have no access to wifi. I am sure I could manually go through and download everything but is there a way to download large amounts at one time? Maybe another software option? Or (quiet so my wife can't hear) maybe I should buy the Psr-800 and have the data and ability to pick up the new p25 phase 2? But then maybe I should wait until a newer scanner comes on the market with better phase 2/tdma support?

Thanks,

While you could get a radio like the PSR800 or Home Patrol, the problem with having the entire DB is that it's a copy from a fixed point in time. There are system(s) that are changing, and you would never be able to be guaranteed that you have the latest and greatest.

Fortunately more and more places are getting set up with wifi hotspots. Starbucks, some MacDonalds and even many public libraries have them now, at least here on the East Coast; and I have no doubt more are coming. It's just too popular a service to not have....best regards..Mike

Hey guys. Thanks for the fast replies! More importantly, thanks for all the work I am sure it takes to keep the database looking tip top. I am interested in scanning and the details involved from the power supply right up to the top of a repeater tower but unfortunately I am somewhat ignorant to the specifics. The database and website you provide here at RadioReference.com are the reason I did not throw in the proverbial towel and give up finding and programming freqs to listen into. So I thank you for your advice and your work!

I think what I am going to do is think ahead and download the places I anticipate my dispatcher dragging me through whenever I have a wifi connection. It's a crazy life out on the road and monitoring everything going on around me has a very calming and centering effect on me. Once again, thanks.

There was a CD made available that contained the database and a web browser based interface.

However, I don't believe any of the programming software could make use of it.

ProScan could, I'm pretty sure...but it's a moot point anyway. The data on the CD is now badly out of date...best regards..Mike

Jon, Do you cross the whole USA or just a few states?

Well, I am coming back from a bit of a hiatus and not entirely sure right now. Think it's just going to be the 11 western states: WA,OR,CA,NV,AZ,ID,MT,UT,CO,WY,NM. I was driving a day cab in Portland, OR for the last few years so it's going to feel new again! If the freight is anything like it was a few years ago I am going to be going up and down I5 a lot.

I would suggest in getting a data card for your laptop if possible. Not only could you keep updated with the database but enjoy the web as well :)

Wow, that schedule is crying out for a HP-1 and a suitable GPS receiver. Then you can just set back and drive!

I am kind of afraid of the hp-1. I tried the bcd996xt and sent it back for the bcd396xt because I wanted more of a radio than a base unit. I love the 396 and carry it with me everywhere. I am in Orlando right now on vacation and have been pulling in all kind of stuff. I am also enjoying how programing and finding frequiencies. It seems like the hp-1 might be a little too easy for my geeky needs. Anyways, I also got some bad news while on vacation. My old company, Interstate Distributor, based out of Tacoma, WA really screwed me up. I called them about a month ago and they said I would be welcome back, so I quit my dishwashing job (long story), left for vacation with the Mrs. Called a couple days ago to confirm my start date and they said sorry, not welcome back. This was after I filled out my rehire packet, passed my drug test and paid $85 to renew my hazmat endorsement. I am pissed! Guess it's back to my college plan, much to my wife's displeasure. Wish me luck!
