I've read a lot of posts on this forum about DPS but they are very confusing.
It seems that in other counties DPS communicates on the main county system, they seem to have their own talkgroup, however for the DFW area (NTIRN) I can't hear them, I can't find them, I don't see their info in the database.

Can somebody please articulate in an easy way what the deal is?

Thanks :)

Have you looked at this post I found in the forums using search? It seems pretty easy to understand.

I have, and that adds to the confusion, I live further up north of that area. I live in the NTIRN area. I didn't see similar talk groups in that system. Did I miss something?

Inside the DFW area they work the Tollways. They will be on this system, I use the Tarrant site.

In Parker County they have a Talkgroup on the Parker County System.
In Denton County they are on the County Patrol channels, ususally ch. 1
In Johnson County they have a Talkgroup on the Johnson County site of NTIRN.
They can still occasionally be heard on their Regional P25 channels but it is hit and miss.
Keep an ear on the NTIRN and GMRS Interop talkgroups for DPS 101.

In addition to the Southeast Texas thread that Raleigh mentioned, also look at this thread, which is more specific to the North Texas/DFW area. DPS does not actively patrol the mostly urban counties, such as Dallas, since all of the highways are within the city limits of one or more of the various cities & towns in the county. The exception to that are the various toll roads here in North Texas, such as the Dallas North Tollway (DNT), the George Bush Turnpike (GBT), Sam Rayburn Tollway (SRT), & the Chisholm Trail Parkway (CTP). Units patrolling those roads are on the Dallas P25?NCTCOG system. The units on the DNT & Bush Turnpike are very active on the Dallas NCTCOG site of that system. The Collin County, & Denton sites, where you'd expect the SRT units to utilize, is out of range for me. Occasionally, I do hear units on the Dallas site, but I would expect them to use the Fort Worth site most of the time, which is not in range for me.

As noted in the thread I linked above, Denton County units apparently are often heard on the Denton S.O. Patrol 1 TGID on the Denton TRS. There is a specific TGID for Tx DPS on that system, but in most counties, DPS uses the Sheriff's Office channels of the counties where units are assigned. DPS Mineral Wells has a TGID on NTIRN, but that is used to communicate with units assigned to Johnson County, and probably only carried on that site. That would almost certainly be out of range for you in the northern part of the area. DPS Mineral Wells dispatching units in Parker County area is on Parker County's system (as Harold has noted).

Other than the Tollways DPS don't do a lot in Dallas. They're mostly in Collin, Kaufman, Hunt and Ellis counties. On occasion you can hear Troopers on IH-30 in Dallas Co. on DPS Dallas 155.45250 123 NAC. DPS CLE is probably more active in Dallas than TLE. Collin THP units use Collin TRS or sometimes Sherman but I've heard them on Dallas also. Also, as a side note BOTH DPS Talkgroups on the NCTCOG system are used so be sure to program both in the scanner.

I see DPS presence regularly on 35W a few miles north of the Tarrant / Denton County line - but I have not tried listening to them yet. In FW when I monitor them, the only traffic I hear them on is the NCTCOG tollway channel. I haven’t monitored Denton County yet.
