DPS has had a license for 44.62 and 44.78 for a number of years. I know that Radio Shack's Police Call book had this noted as the AL Surface mining Commission Freq. Is this true?

Just wondering if it is ever used for anything or is a relic of the past?

The one in Dutton has the same callsignas the Highway Patrol "KIB513", although Huntsville has KRK239 for low band and KIB513 for high band.

In over ten plus years of travel through Bamma, I never even once heard any traffic on any of the DPS Lo Band stuff..... It may be some kind of special tac freq for some purpose or another,.. but I never heard anything on it. Plus,.. anyone know what freq AHP uses to interop with MHP?????? Or for that matter what AHP uses to interop with GSP???

AST units all have 155.475 - the National Law Enforcement Net

Years ago, the city of Huntsville, AL had a transmitter on 155.370, the Tennessee Intercity channel. It was decommissioned a number of years ago. The radio used was an old GE Exec base. It is in our storage room at EMA.

Once upon a time, 10-12 years ago when I was a dispatcher, we used to relay reports to the town of Ardmore AL/TN (yes- the town is in both states) on Alabama mutual aid 155.010 and they would in turn call Fayetteville, TN on that frequency. Fayetteville, TN would answer back on TN low band mutual aid 37.26. Ardmore had an old receiver with a telescoping antenna sitting in the office that received low band. That is how communications sometimes was relayed across state lines. That is not done anymore to my knowledge.

I think Georgia operates on high band still, so they may be able to communicate with AST on the national 155.475

The Alabama Prison system is alive and well on low band. 45.98 is an active frequency near any prison.

As far as I know, AL. DPS DOES NOT use those low-band frequencies.
I've had them programmed into my scanner for years and have never
heard anything other than "skip" from somewhere in the Pacific time-zone.
The AL. Dept. of Corrections does use 45.9800 for security operations
on vehicle radios, prisoner transport & work-release details. Operations
INSIDE State Prisons are on UHF Lo-Power repeaters/HT's.

At the hairdresser's, past the liquor store.
DPS does not use any VHF Lo frequencies. At this point, I'm not sure if any state agency uses the frequencies in question. To my limited knowledge, the Surface Mining Commission did have a transmitter in Walker County on the lo-band freqs many years ago.

Someday, when I can, I'm going to go into the archives of DPS and see what I can find out about the early days of communications. Maybe DPS started out on those frequencies.

I think EVERYBODY started out on Lo Band,.. and only a few still use it as far as state troopers,.. California still is on it except where they can run on local TRS's,... Mississippi is still on it ,.. simulcasting in areas where they can run on local Hi Band and TRS's,... TN is on it for a few more years till thier statewide TRS is fully active,... NC is also on it for a lil while longer till thier statewide TRS is also fully active..... I think even OK, AR,.. are both going to thier 800 as fast as they can. I think a couple like SC,.. and maybe MA,... still have Lo Band as a backup,... or as specail dead zone usage in addition to their TRS's...... GA is still on Hi Band,.. but is also working on getting a statewide TRS.
