DSD (Linux) USB sound 'cards' & Error message: Invalid sample rate

I have experienced this error with:

Edirol UA-1A
Edirol 5A
Generic Chinese card with chip built into USB plug, with two 3' leads terminated in 1/8/3.5mm jacks.

What devices are known to work, and work well?

I should mention the two cards that I have found do not produce this error.

Both contain the same chip, however I should add that I'm yet to build a usable DSD system with either. Sound output is barely discernible , very garbled and stuttered. This may not be the sound cards, it could be the OS etc.
