Well, I know some commercial radios decode DTMF with option board, but my question is which radio model do I need to decode DTMF?

I would like to buy a ham radio used or not with a built in decoder.

Thanks.

Pretty much any vhf/uhf ham rig with a dtmf mic. will also decode dtmf if it's able to transmit it,as it's needed to do this for irlp or repeater control functions. Is this what you were asking?

A lot of current 2m/440 FM rigs have "paging" functions that can beep or open squelch on a 3 or 4 digit DTMF sequence.

Let's first find out from the original poster what their intended use of this function is. If it's to decode a set unit or group ID code, then your answer fits. If it's to decode over the air repeater control codes or phone numbers being sent to an autopatch, then it needs to be an open ended DTMF reader that is external to the radio like the one that Ramsey Electronics sold.

To do what?

I am guessing that you need an external decoder or a repeater controller that decodes DTMF.

Wow, deja vu, that was my Sr. project 25+ years ago.

I didn't know DTMF decode had become so common.

I have a kenwood and a icom that will both decode dtmf digits, but didn't realize it til I started using them for repeater control access.
